If We Were Having Coffee And A Recent Change

 Source

If we were having coffee, and after we visited about my latest favorite , Community  Hotel Blend, I would bring up something I have re-added to my daily routine.

But first… the reason.

My daughters and I often call our enjoyment of all things internet as,
“ going down a rabbit hole”.

I will confess as a blogger, I enjoy doing this daily.

I am easily distracted .

My reading ranges from reading your blogs and checking Instagram, Facebook, and Pinterest
to what one of my favorite You Tube vloggers is doing to camouflage
her ‘mature woman’s’ hooded eye,

to what is the best hotel in San Miguel de Allende,

to who will be the starting quarterback for Texas A&M this fall,

to searching Ebay for vintage Mexican silver jewelry,

to reading Mommy bloggers and wondering how our 3 daughters survived us using umbrella strollers, ‘swings’ you cranked up, sketchy seat belts, and store bought baby food.

Then I re-surface, realize I haven’t written a ‘quality’ blog post with ‘value’ where I
teach you ‘things’ , and the siren call hits again and down the rabbit hole I go.

So what did I add?
Reading…

as in reading books… from the library… in all three formats: audio books, E books, and hardbacks.

Why?
Because if I were a student in Mrs. Harrison’s (my own) high school AP English class, I would have been called up
to the teacher’s desk long ago and asked,

”What are you doing? You have to broaden your horizons if you expect to write with any degree of interest.
What happened? You used to be an avid reader !”

To which I, as the student, would sheepishly say, “well there’s the internet and this rabbit hole…”

So there is the reason- and so I read.

I am currently listening to Revenant on audio book in my car (have you ever listened to a bear
attack while driving to the grocery store? I almost had to pull over-),
and I have Discovery of Witches (I am late to this trilogy party and so far I am not a fan),
and I am headed to the library today for a stack of books .

I am almost back to normal :)

  1. I'm trying to read more novels and books as well. I only made it about a third of the way through "A Discovery of Witches" before putting it aside. I just couldn't get into it, despite its topic which should otherwise interest me. The best book I've read recently is "The Shield of Achilles" by Madeline Miller. She is a wonderful, beautiful writer and her book deservedly won the Orange Prize for fiction about 3 years ago.

  2. I don't want to hear that bear!! I do get that we have to expand to be better though. Thanks for the reminder. :)

  3. I am trying to get back to reading books in hand as well. I am excited our book club will be starting back up in September and this year I will actually have time to read and be a part of.

  4. What a fun post!! I think we are all guilty of the same....so, do you love the book? It sounds super interesting! Although perhaps reading about a bear attack wouldn't be the best thing for me to do....

  5. Had to laugh about the sling strollers, etc.! That was my time as a mom to littles as well! They all did survive - as did we...

  6. Add me to those who get sucked down the rabbit hole!

I've started to read books again, too, and to get off the computer and do real things!

I do love the Internet, blogs, Pinterest, FB, but I want to make sure I'm having a real life too!

  7. Oh dear, you've hit the nail on the head! Rabbit hole indeed! Guilty as charged! I get up in the morning, make my coffee and sit down to reading blogs, checking Instagram, fb, email, Pinterest and before I know it, my morning is half way over and what have I accomplished? Yikes. I need to go to the library and check out some real books. Do the things on my lists. (That's one good thing about the farm...the Internet connection sucks so I do more there). I need to learn to limit my online time.

  8. Yep! Happens to me every single day. And the day gets away from me.

  9. I just started using Audible about 3 weeks ago and I'm on my 3rd book. I'm so enjoying listening to books. Hey, I go down that rabbit hole way more than I care to admit. Happy week!

  11. Oh Laura, I have taking the path down the rabbit hole too. It's all part of my daily routine. Wake up, peek in the hole, get ready for the day, look closer in the hole, begin to work, scoot half way in the hole, lunch, all the way down the hole, work more, go back in the hole!! and the day is gone from there. haha I am trying to do less and it's a challenge isn't it?
Have a great rest of the week.xo

  12. Laura,
I could not agree more about the "rabbit hole." Leaving for the mountains for 2 weeks really clarified so many things in my life for me, and just like you it is time for a change.
I don't want to wake up in 10 years and view my life as nothing more than "killing time."
Thanks for the reminder, perhaps we can hold one another accountable.

  16. Laura, the "wind up swing" cracked me up. My three daughters and I just had this conversation and they laughed so hard at me telling and showing them how I used to have to do that with them!!! I love to read! When I am teaching indepth Bible studies I find it harder to honestly have the extra time to read but when I teaching low-key I always try to add extra book here or there. I actually have a book now to read when I go to the beach next week and I had to hide it out my sight just to keep from reading it before then! Hugs and blessings, Cindy

  17. Laura,
The "crank" swing was a "cure" for both my fussy sons, dear friend!
Doubt I would have survived those early years of Motherhood without that swing! (wink!)
I read on a daily basis. . .I find it relaxing and yes, I agree with your past Teacher!
    Good readers make great writers!
Now, shall we share a cup o' coffee?
    Fondly,
    Pat

  18. I so feel you! I used to be an avid reader and haven't read a full book in so long. I asked for a Kindle for my birthday to get me reading again!

  19. Oh, the internet does pull us in, doesn't it? It is so amazing to have all of the information in the world available right here! I think back to when I was in high school and college and you had to actually go to a library, and use a card catalog! I don't get much time to read, but don't you worry, I am going on a 2 week cruise! No internet plan for me! I will be resting and exercising and swimming and READING!!! But, please come to the Celebrate Your Story party, I have it covered! You may not get a comment from me those 2 weeks, but I will be back on the internet big time when I get back!

  20. I have been trying to get off my computer and read more, my favorite books are chick lit, humor, detective types, the Revenant would be way to scary for me! I am scared to listen to audio books while I'm driving, I would be way too distracted!

  21. I too get sucked in by my computer. I work at one all day and spend most evenings after supper on my laptop. But I love to read. I find many best sellers at the thrift store. For a while after my daddy died, I was unable to read. I just couldn't concentrate. But I am about back to normal now and I read most weekends, and sometimes right before going to sleep.
I haven't read it, but we saw the movie The Revenant. Its an amazing story.

  22. I love reading and books. Just love it. Don't really do audio books, though I should en route to and from the lake. It's interesting -- at home, I tend to get so into the computer -- doing just as you are with blog hopping and such. But in the summer at the lake with no internet and very limited TV, I read all the time. And I'm loving it and trying now to read more at home. We'll see how it goes!

So hats off to you, Laura! I think you'll love being back in the swing of it!
