In recent years, I have created a command central of sorts where I sit
in the den.
(Picture the bridge on the Star Ship Enterprise.)
It is convenient, and as you know,
one of my main theories about decor in your home is that it is all about
how you live in that home.
I may have gone a bridge too far.
Yes, everything is at my fingertips: my laptop is on the ottoman where my feet are propped, my cell phone is charging, my Kindle is nearby, and my ever present list and pen is waiting to the right on an end table with a small trash basket underneath.
I have a power strip peeking out from the adjacent couch for charging whatever electronic device I am using.
I can reach the basket of remotes on the end table to my left (when my husband doesn’t have them).
Inside that basket are pens and markers and a measuring tape and ear buds and unopened mail and other things for multi tasking.
I can do many of my favorite things (blog, read, call, text) all with the flick of a wrist.
(That is embarrassing to admit!)
And to this all, yesterday I said ENOUGH.
I stripped things away.
They are now all sitting on the dining table in a nearby room.
What is my plan?
I don’t know as yet, I just know I had to strip away the convenience created clutter
to get to that plan.
Right now I am focusing on breathing and other kinds of movement .
Please tell me you can relate to convenience created clutter?

Yeah. Got little piles of it all over my place.
ReplyDeleteTechnology is great, but I refuse to let it takeover our home!! Can't wait to see what you come up with.
ReplyDeleteMay the force be with you, my friend.
ReplyDeleteI have one phone charger and it is always plugged in next to my bed. I only use a desktop computer whenever we're at home, and I don't own a Kindle or anything of the sort. The Man has a couple of chargers for his phone and tablet, one in the man cave, the other next to the couch.
As for the trusty pen and paper, I keep a set on my book table next to my bed, and plenty in my home office.
Yes, I have times like that, too! Then I put stuff away or find a place to keep it all contained while looking nice!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see what you come up with, Laura!
I understand!! Let's be real though...that place is perfect!
ReplyDeleteOh, do I ever understand and am sitting right this minute in my "convenience cluttered area" and enjoying every minute of it. I don't think yours looks all that cluttered at all. It's more like organized clutter and I love mine and can't wait to see what you do with yours. Not sure you can top what you already have.
ReplyDeleteOh yes, it's a necessary evil I'm afraid. I'm sure you'll come up with a solution!

Oh I thought that was my area:) I have ALL of that at my fingertips too. Good luck with keeping it cleared, I just can't seem to make it happen! Have a blessed day dear Laura, HUGS!
ReplyDeleteOh my mercy Laura you don't want to know about my clutter right now! But I hear your heart girl! Hugs and blessings, Cindy
ReplyDeleteIt is both a blessing and a curse....and it happens to all of us! Looking forward to seeing how you tackle it!
ReplyDeleteLaura you say this like it's a bad thing.LOL
ReplyDeletehaha, oh yes. It starts off innocently enough then blossoms from there. Yikes. And I'm not the only one...my husband has his too. It doesn't matter if I have baskets to contain it or not, it ends up way too much! I'm looking forward to seeing how you tackle yours. Maybe I'll finally figure out how to get mine under control. :o)
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to what you come up with Laura!
ReplyDeleteI have baskets and baskets of things, and we just moved here less than a year ago...oh dear.
ha! I have a tray by my favorite chair that holds all my "needs." I have a blue ball jar that holds a lipstick, nail file, eyeglass cleaner, small bottle of Advil. I even have a decorative mug that I use for a mini trash can for kleenex which is also there in a decorative box. Everything is CUTE of course but I'm thinking it's starting to look like a nightstand, and maybe I just need to put it away and get off my rear more often :) !!! Thanks for the inspire!!
ReplyDeleteLaura,
ReplyDeleteOh, dear friend, I can so~o~o relate!
My stash of reading materials is piled high on the footstool beside my chair in the Living Room. However, I do clear it off most everyday! (wink!)
Being at home, retired, and being able to enjoy home is a true blessing!
Cute post!
Fondly,
Pat
Oh, yeah! Convenience and clutter. My reading stack toppled when I was trying to pull out something from the middle. That has been modified! And my desk... I have clutter issues. I try and then fall back. But the only thing I can do is keep at it! You, my friend, seem to have it under control!
ReplyDeleteAs I was reading your post I thought how nifty she has all her things at her fingertips and it looks nice. I didn't think it looked cluttered at all. I'm tempted to send you a private pic of my corner by the window! It takes too long to gather everything you need not to have a comfortable place to blog, read and organize your day.
ReplyDeleteYou have hit home where we all are. We want pretty and functional. I've always heard "form follows function" but it is a challenge!
