Dear Daughters,
There is no finer music to a mother’s ear than a conversation that begins by a daughter saying, “remember
when?”.
And so when I hear those words when we are all together, I smile.
Granted there are those times when you finish that phrase with ‘you dropped me on my head’, or ‘you made
me wear a big bow in my hair’, or ‘everyone else got to go’, or ‘you actually had our lamb blankets
monogrammed’!
Because I am your mother, however, I have those same memories.
I remember how scared I was when you wiggled out of my arms and yes, you hit your head (Katherine).
I remember how cute (to me ) you looked when all 3 of you were wearing big bows in your hair.
And I remember how cute you looked walking your monogrammed blanket wearing lambs to the show pen
for judging at the livestock show.
Recently, we had a ‘remember when’ conversation about week night suppers.
I was teaching full time and many nights I felt like I wasn’t doing enough to get some sort of gourmet supper
on the table .
But that is not the way you remember it.
You liked Friday night pizza night, and you liked chalupas or tacos, or Dad’s roast, or salmon patties and
macaroni and cheese, or homemade hamburgers.
On nights you had dancing lessons , you didn’t mind Church’s fried chicken.
What a blessing for a sometimes harried mother , who wanted to cook more elaborately, but who just
couldn’t find another minute in the day.
Thank you for ‘remembering when’ as selectively as I do.
I love you , Mom
I think every mother prays her children have a bit of selective memory for the times when we judge ourselves the harshest.
ReplyDeleteYes, we always pray the good times/memories outweigh the not so great ones.
ReplyDeleteI remember when I was a young mother and had a really bad mom moment...I would pray that my sons would not remember those moments. And they don't. Thank you Jesus. ♥
ReplyDeleteOh, we enjoyed some "remember when" moments last week while our daughter was home. As you said, "music to a Mom's ear." Enjoyable post!
ReplyDeleteThose 'remember when's'....what a sweet validation of childhood memories!
ReplyDeleteWe have the same name for it 'remember whens' and we can take off with them at any time, but always, always on a birthday. It's a ritual!
ReplyDeleteAwe...what a sweet post. Memories...such an awesome gift to have and to share! Hugs and blessings, Cindy
ReplyDeleteI thought I was so bad when kid # 3 came along and when she was 8-17 we had hamburger helper in front of Wheel of Fortune...turns out it was her favorite! Mine too!

Remember when memories are my favorite, either childhood old, or from last month. There's something sweet about "remember" memories that bring back smiles.
ReplyDeleteI worked full time too and my Mama cooked many of my evening meals for my little family. My Daughter and I have those memory conversations too:). Have a blessed evening dear Laura. Hugs
ReplyDeleteLaura,
ReplyDeleteOh, how I love to stroll down memory lane, dear friend!
As a busy Mother of two boys, often on my own,
while "Mr. Ed" was off doing his Soldier Boy Routines;
I depended on Crock Pot Recipes!
Many times, especially before a pay day,
I'd whip something together with what I had in the fridge and pantry.
Oddly, it would turn out amazingly good!
The boys would ask, "Cane we have this again?"
My response, "Sure, if I can remember what I put in this recipe!"
Thank you for sharing such a cute post!
Fondly,
Pat
It is amazing to learn what your kids remember growing up, such sweet memories!

You've inspired me to do my own Remember When post! Such sweet memories!
ReplyDeleteVery sweet! I love when I say "remember when?" and my daughters say, I don't remember that! Mostly it is good they don't remember. They now cook for their families the meals I made for them as kids :-)
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet post.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing with SYC.
