If We Were Having Coffee

If We Were Having Coffee

If we were having coffee, I would tell you what the dermatologist said to me last week.

She said my skin looked tired and sad- which because I am susceptible to the power of suggestion-

IMMEDIATELY made me feel tired and sad.

She then outlined the course of treatment and what I needed to purchase , which
IMMEDIATELY made me

feel tired, sad, and in shock.

And then, a la Scarlett O’Hara, I decided to think about that tomorrow, and I left.

What skincare regimen do you use?

IMGP1231

After we poured our second cup of coffee, I’d tell you about an organizational/purging technique I

created this
weekend.

Instead of using Marie Kondo’s organizing question, ”Does this bring me joy?”,

I instead said loudly,”I can’t stand this craziness another minute!!”

Try it…it works and doesn’t feel so open ended.

Have a good week! White Spray Paint will be going through a tiny makeover soon.

After all, we don’t want to look tired and sad around here, right?

  1. who ever wants to HEAR they look tired and sad?! I enjoyed my 'not coffee' with you today!(could relate:)
I had a Dr. years ago who told me to save my money on things you apply on the skin (skin problems aside) He told me there is no 'youth in a bottle' but to drink lots of water, get enough sleep, eat a healthy diet, and wash with a mild soap like Dove or Ivory; inexpensive and effective, and a face cream if skin is dry; I use a vitamin E cream. Some of the above are easier said than done, but I'm sure it is true. thank-you for providing life's best medicine; laughter!

    Nice pics, as always.

  2. I like your method a LOT better than Marie's.

Yikes, that had to be a horrible appointment. I'll use moisturizer in the morning (that yellow Clinique one) but that's it. Just water for my face, no soap. Sunscreen in the outdoors. The rest of it seems to take care of itself. Genetics probably helps, too!

You don't need expensive products. Or at least not a regimen of them. And from the photo on your profile, I think you look fabulous. Just sayin'...

  3. I like your decluttering mantra. I don't have a regime unless you count washing face in the shower every day, using face lotion occasionally and lipstick always. Oh, and wearing hats outside.

  4. Well what a thing for your doctor to say to you! I do nothing for my skin. Never ever used sunscreen. And I've had people comment on how smooth my skin is. Maybe it's genetics. But the only thing that goes on my face is what goes on my body, Dove Exfoliating soap. That's it.

  5. Sometimes I think they drum up those answers for more money...honestly! I am a less is more girl when it comes to my sensitive skin and it seems to be working just fine. I saw great results when I was washing with aragon oil or EVOO, but got tired of the greasy sink! LOL Personally, I think you look fabulous. I also agree with Janet's comment. I think it is more about what we put into our bodies rather than slather on them.

  6. First of, your pretty blog needs no makeover...and as for you, my friend, nor do you. What a awful thing for the doctor to say. I had been using Dove and one day, my sister in law who is German, started me on Clinique, very expensive, but well worth it. One doesn't have to use a lot ---even on the makeup. Which, one will never see me without, just saying (a girl has be somewhat vain, right?)--I have dry skin regardless of the seasons, and I like the dewy effect Clinique does to my skin. I don't know what's in the stuff, but for me, I loveeeee it. And since I am almost 50, every bit of magic helps with hiding the creeping lines. smiles

ANYWAYS---Like I said, the blog nor you need a makeover. Have a beautiful day, friend.

  7. Hi, Laura!
Once a week, I use Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay which cleans out my pores and tightens them. I think your blog is pretty as is so anything else you choose will really be fun I'm sure. Enjoy your week!

  8. My mom once gave me the gift of a facial for my birthday. The lady talked the whole way through my relaxing time. She asked me, "What are you using on your face because obviously it is not working for you."

They just want to sell you ridiculously expensive potions. I find that to be a little unethical for a doc though.

My dermatologist said to use Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair with Retinol. That's what I'm doing. :)

I was going to ask you if you had revamped your blog a few days ago. Really...whatcha gonna do?

  9. Aww Laura I think you look great from that photo of yourself. I use CeraVe cream on my face and Clinique on my eyelids at night and that is it. Yes you do not need to spend a lot on creams as I've tried the expensive stuff and it's all the same! I too like your blog look. :)
Take care and enjoy the week. Julie

  10. Gosh, it sound like your dermatologist was trying to make some sales!!! What a thing to say and then a sales pitch.
I love the look of your blog and your pretty face on the sidebar!

  11. What was she thinking!? She obviously slept through the class when they taught bedside manners. I think you're lovely!

  12. Green juice will make your skin glow.

Of course you will need a juicer, but here's my recipe:
    Handful of kale
    Handful of romaine
    Cucumber
    Green apple

It's delicious and is so good for you.

  13. I never use soap on my skin. After showering, I put Jergens hand cream on my face because my skin gets dry (probably from the shampoo I used for my hair). That's it. That's the whole secret to my Ageless Beauty, LOL! There is no greater snake oil than skin products snake oil. And they cost a friggin' fortune!

  14. hahhaa...bless your heart, you are the cutest thing.
I am so olden now, I don't really have a skin care system going on. Clean the wrinkled face, put so much moisturizer on, I have to hold on to the sheets to keep from sliding out of bed and that's about it...
I thought about you the other day when I was spray painting a metal shelf WHITE...XO

  15. If we were having coffee I'd tell you that I have more wrinkles than my nearly-ninety year old mum. It's true. I just moisturise my wrinkles morning and night and I smile a lot because my wrinkles all seem to be smile lines and they disappear when I smile!

  16. Oh, I was afraid you were going to say the Dr. told you not to drink coffee.
Let's have another cup and visit about what stuff we are getting rid of. ;-)
    Happy May Day!

  17. Ouch! I think she was after a big sale.
Laura, please could you send me your address for the Stationery swap, and I will send you your partner immediately. Many thanks.

  18. I wish there were miracle products out there that would make all of this saggy skin firm up but, alas, nothing but a surgeon's knife will do that. So far, that's not in my budget but never say never. Getting old is not for wimps. My skin care regiment is pretty basic but I do the best I can.

    I love your purging/organizing method. :)

  19. I am in the process of going thru the house a spot at a time and giving away what I don't use. If I haven't worn it or used it in two years - why do I have it? It's very hard sometimes to part with clothes, books, and things. Other times it is very liberating. Good luck - may you feel young and free in your decluttering.

  20. Started working yesterday on purging things from my house and getting a little more organized...it can be overwhelming, but so freeing! Wishing you a great start to your week!

  21. That's a horrible thing for a doctor to say...especially to get you to buy her products! I simply use Oil of Olay....and put a generous amount on. I have very dry skin....I think it's the lack of humidity up here in Wisconsin. Now...can we get to our coffee...and the best way to purge? ;)

  22. Well Dr. tell us how you really feel. My goodness! I think my organizing methods are a lot like yours Laura. I just reach a point of no return and start throwing stuff out. I don't have time to hold conversations with inanimate objects. They never respond.;-)

  23. I use Lacura from Aldi's. I use the face wash and the day cream and night cream. That's it.

I like your method better than the spark joy one!

  26. OH, everytime I go to my Dermatologist she tells me about all these non invasive procedures that are available to help with all the visible signs of aging. Of course, they only cost a few thousand each. :o)) In the meantime I'll stick with my Mary Kay regime.

Can't wait to hear how your "ridding" process goes.

    Happy week!

  27. Laura,
I would change doctors. That is terrible. Clearly trying to push procedures on you.
My doctor pushed me to get the flu shot in January. I had an extreme allergic reaction to it and lost some of my hearing. I thought I was going to meet my Maker that night!
If a doctor is pushing you and it has nothing to do with a health condition that might cause you harm, run!
You should have told her that it was funny but he or she looked sad and tired, too.
    That is just wrong!

  30. Your post made me smile. I love coffee so I'll gladly have a cup or two with you. Thanks for sharing at Thoughts of Home on Thursday.

  31. First off, you are very pretty; second....bad Dr., bad bad bad! I had extremely bad acne when I was about 14 and our G.P. (an old curmudgeon who smoked in exam rooms -- yes, I am that old and hard to believe that doctors did that) told me to scrub my face with Ivory soap. I did as instructed and it actually worked on my very oily skin. By the time I got to high school, my skin was clear, but all of my friends were having big-time acne problems. I definitely don't use soap anymore, but I cleanse my face morning and night with Neutrogena Face Foaming Cleanser. My skin has gotten dry with "aging" and living in the AZ desert for the last 30+years, so I use Olay Regenerist Moisturizer at night and Olay Complete All Day Moisturizer for daytime (this has an spf 15). I've always used a liquid or mineral powder foundation, but I've recently switched to Maybelline BB Cream, which is a tinted moisturizer with spf 30. I really like this product, especially with our "coming soon" desert heat. I really think my skin is pretty good for a 67 year old!

I have the Marie Kondo book, but have had to put my own spin on decluttering. I couldn't handle dumping all of our clothes or books onto the floor and going through them that way....that would definitely make my entire body look sad and tired!

Now, treat yourself to another coffee, either hot or iced, and relax. Mother's Day should be every day....just sayin', but at least take the entire weekend and be kind to yourself!

    Warm hugs,
    Carol

  32. Tired and sad? That's what she said? Well, that's a pretty 'downer' way to try inspire someone to take better care of their skin. I like your attitude though--getting rid of extra crap always makes me feel so much better. Although when I'm truly tired and sad, talking about it makes me feel better.
That and hot yoga---it's amazing how good my skin looks after all that sweating.
