Kitchen Counters and Floors: A Handbag and Shoes

Saltillo

Saltillo tile from Mexico fills my home.

Traditionally created from the clay of the clay pits around the area of Saltillo, Mexico, it is a beautifully rustic

12” x 12” tiIe.

I have it throughout my home(with the exception of the bedrooms), and I have always loved it.

I faced a decor dilemma a few years ago, when it was time to select a new kitchen counter top.

All of the trending kitchen counter solutions , although beautiful, were just not me.

Finally, one day while standing in my kitchen, I hit upon a typically quirky White Spray Paint design solution:

Kitchen counters and kitchen flooring are like a handbag and shoes.

I selected my new countertop (the handbag)  based on the accompanying shoes (the floor).

Why does this method work?

It is not, I assure you because I think things must ‘match’.

For me it is about creating a design pathway to a decision.

It is that moment of design creativity that allows me to envision a right result.

My shoes and purse don’t always match , but there is a plan.

I decided to use the same framework process for my kitchen.

This all makes sense, right?

  1. Perfect sense actually! And, I think they look fabulous together. I was the rebel...when everyone was picking granite counters and tumbled marble for their backsplash, I went with Corian and subway tile. It was me. Haven't looked back.

The Silver Lining sign is a favorite of mine. One of these days I'm going to buy one. :)

  11. I think it does! I matched my flooring to the paint for my cabinets and the floor. There has to be some cohesion or it doesn't work :)

Laura, the post about your dad really touched me. What a special thing to have places that make you think of him in your garden. I hope your zinnias flourish.

  21. Fantastic ideas here, I have to visit some of the blogs and Pin a few things! I miss joining parties but I am so pressed for time in visiting everyone...back in the day you DID visit everyone. Well, at least the ones that you were curious about. Maybe one day.

Thanks for your visit. I think you will make the chicken recipe with ease. I've learned from many of my French cookbooks that most of the food in the French countryside is very peasant like, roasted chickens, fish, bread and cheese and simple salads. Stews and soups with a nice dose of wine. But yes, there are some involved things that have your spoons and pans flying! That's an adventure for me!!

Have a great weekend, dear friend!

  22. So much brighter, beachy (without being too over the top thematic) and functional.
