My Collecting

Copper Hutch

Disclaimer:  I have thought about this list since I wrote this post earlier this evening .

I enjoyed all of the adventures connected to this list because they involved my mother or my daughters or

trips to Round Top or many, many early morning trips to the flea market.

That is what the list is about-

it is not about the things on the list.

*****

I started collecting flea market, garage/ estate sale finds, thrift store treasures, and

hand me downs from family and friends about 40 years ago.

Pause… that’s a long time…

That’s long enough to say- a la Reba McIntire-

“I collected milk glass before milk glass was cool.”

During all of that time I have collected ,

milk glass

hammered aluminum serving pieces

copper

Department 56 houses

vintage cooking utensils

cobalt blue glass

Franciscan Platinum Renaissance china- and Grey Renaissance, and Gold Renaissance (for my daughter)

Spode Blue Italian

Johnson Brothers Old Britain Castles

champagne flutes

Blue Danube china (for two of my daughters)

Woodland Spode

silverplate flatware

silverplate serving pieces

King’s Crown goblets

cake pedestals

Franciscan Madeira Goblets

Noritake Hemingway and Fitzgerald china

Ruby Red octagonal goblets in all sizes

sets of Mexican pottery from Puebla, San Miguel de Allende, and Dolores Hidalgo

vintage Mexican pottery

vintage Mexican silver jewelry

beaded evening bags

soup tureens

IMG_5836

floral frogs

community/auxiliary/junior league cookbooks

small vases for my zinnias

In fact, I have had some of these collections long enough , and as my interests have changed, I have given

pieces to my daughters,

given pieces to friends, sold pieces at market days, or donated pieces.

I love using my collections , which is one of life’s greatest pleasures.

(I never pay high prices.

I prefer digging with my head stuck in a box at the flea market and La Bamba playing in the background.)

What do you collect?

You have quite the collections. But, if you love them and display them beautifully as you do I say go for it! And, lucky daughters you have.

Wow! I don't collect anything. I have a few pitchers that I like, but my motto is if I can't use it in everyday life, then what good is it? :) I am on a real "simplify" kick and have been hauling loads of stuff to Goodwill, on and off for almost a year now. We're almost there and I must say, it feels great!

Ordinarily I am the World's Worst Collector. I get about 6 items and then I lose interest. But having said that, I DO currently have an extensive collection of statues of the Divine Feminine (around 75-80 at last count) and a large collection of religious 3D and wiggle pictures.

You have had some really nice collections, Laura. I have collected many things in the last 50 years, colored cruets, cookbooks, rooster/chickens, old coffee grinders, pitchers, tureens, wind chimes, Christmas snowman ornaments, napkin rings, linens...I am stuck on Bordallo Pinheiro cabbage dishes at the moment. I really should be downsizing instead of adding...my kids aren't going to be happy when I die and they have to clean up...as my daughter says, a big yard sale at 25¢ per plate!!

Transferware, flower frogs, mercury glass, and white platters. You win the collector award, Laura. I love that you have collected so many different things but your house doesn't look cluttered at all.

That's a lot of collecting! Your copper with blue and white collection is lovely.
Me? Blue and white anything. Red transferware and bits of white ironstone.

OMG - You have a lot of collections - how much fun! I collect quite a few things but I think you have me beat! I collect Depression Glass, Noah's Ark pieces, vintage hankerchiefs, any kind of old lace and linens - just to name a few.

Enjoy your collections.

I really like your copper collection and how you have displayed it. I've always liked copper. My dad was a plumber and he made me copper jewelry, long before it was popular that copper was good to wear to relive pain and antimicrobial. I have a copper sink in my kitchen. I collect santos carved wooden ones, retablos, and angels. I prefer to buy a painting to a print. I love china, but I don't have a collection. I don't have many collections.

I don't collect much of anything any more. I have maybe 8-10 white pitchers. I just don't have the room!

I love your copper collection, especially displayed with the blue and white. That soup looks really good, too. It is pretty cold here, and I have been on a roll with new soups.

I collect tiles. I started the collection with my mother in 1966 -- Yikes! 50 years this summer. I've bought a number since then, but no two are sweeter than the first tiles we chose together in Holland. Love my blue and white Delft.

Friends & memories. LONG story---but I have down sized into less than 1/2 the space I lived in for years. The stuff---mostly had to go---but now---my friends and memories only take up space in my head!
Blessings!
PS--your stuff is lovely!

That is quite the list,Laura! I think we all ebb in and out of collections. Some have staying power and others just hang around for a season. I love blue and white transfer ware. It's such a timeless look and so easy to find and collect.

What a gorgeous collection of copper! Last week I had someone visit my home and they went gaga over the vintage schoolhouse map in my son's room. They asked "How on earth did you pay just $20 for that?" I said "I bought the map WAY before maps were cool and wasn't afraid to clean off the spiderwebs." :)

Happy day!

I noticed you mentioned Franscian. I have Franciscan crystal from our wedding registrary back in 1975. Is that company still around? Ha!
I love collecting ironstone pieces, and cute linen tea towels lately. I have collected silver julep cups and have enough so I have basically stopped adding more. I love old southern silver...but don't have enough to call it a collection. I have been collecting Beatriz Ball pieces too. And lastly I should count my blue and white transfer ware, blue and white chinoiserie, etc. fun post. Sheila
