Dear Daughters: Halloween Confession

Halloween-Candy1

Dear Daughters,

I confess…

When you were little, I may have searched through your Halloween candy under

the guise of looking for razor blades or other

threats to your safety

(hallucinogenic tattoos or LSD laced suckers)

so I could

pick out my favorite chocolate candy (Snickers) or other candy (Reese’s Peanut Butter cups).

I confess…

that Halloween costumes were not in my wheel house,

especially after a long hard day of teaching English,

so with great dramatic encouragement

and the lure of all of my jewelry and makeup,

I talked you into being a gypsy or a witch

year after year.

There…

I feel better.

Trick or Treat!

I love you,

Mom

A Fall Tablescape Using Purple

IMG_2362

(a favorite fall tablescape from the past)

This fall tablescape was a pleasure to create because of two things:

the use of a new color (purple)

and

this is one of my favorite times of the year.

IMG_2333

I wanted to use purple, and I wanted to fill the table.

I used everything I could find.

I LOVE doing that.

More really is more.

IMG_2325

It may seem like too much, but that is the way I like it.

IMG_2318

I used my Royal Stafford bird dishes and my Nyssa garage sale soup tureens.

And even though they are not my favorite (as my grandson says), I am so glad I kept my 12

mercurochrome colored goblets.

I have 12- and for several years I have tried to sell them at a local antique mall.

They just wouldn’t leave (sell), because alone they are pretty startling, but mixed in with everything on the table, they become wonderful.

I love THAT too.

My Reed and Barton Francis 1st still makes my heart flutter – and it  has since I chose it many, many years ago.

I only had one place setting for years.

I didn’t tend to it, I didn’t make it a priority, and rightly so I guess.

And then one day I woke up, years had gone by, and I thought,

‘I better get this show on the road.’

And so I turned to Ebay.

I am just so grateful today-

which is not to say that perfection lives in my house,

because it does not.

But the irregular does-

*my purple tablecloth from DD’s Discount- which is a retail phenomenon in and of itself.

That is where things from Ross are sent out to pasture.

Can you imagine?

*my ceramic pumpkins from Walgreen’s- I love multi-task shopping, don’t you?

You can even buy Blue Bell there.

*my copper colored, mercury glass candlesticks (from a garage sale), that I found stuck and forgotten in a cabinet in the little house

*my goblets that wouldn’t leave

and

a simple life today.

Blue and White in the Kitchen

Kitchen

(my kitchen sitting area)

Earlier this summer, when the yellow and beige walls of our beloved home started closing in,

and I couldn’t breathe,

I decided to go back to my favorite décor roots .

All of the yellow and beige walls were painted white , and I brought out my blue and white

in abundance.

Kitchen2

Sigh.

What did I learn is this process?

*The frame above, previously white (see navigation bar above), was floating like an eye chart.

I set out on the quest to find just the right gold paint.

I wanted it to be Hobby Lobby gold.

More on that later.

Kitchen3

The second thing I learned?

How my house feels determines how I feel, and I like that very much.

Plus- I can breathe.

Fall Mantel 2013

Fall Mantel 2013

Isn’t the ease of fall the best part of it’s charm?

I assembled everything on this mantel in about 20 minutes,

including hammering the swag on top of my monogram burlap canvas.

Does the easy way call to anyone else- aside from me?

I know you’re out there.

We are all traveling through different seasons in life, and simpler calls to me right now.
