Dear Daughters: Family Sayings

IMG_9954

Dear Daughters,

I have decided that the sayings common to our family serve as a sort of safety deposit box.  They allow

you to set your worries aside, breathe, and wait for what is bound to happen next.

You know exactly what I mean if Nonnie (my mother) ever pressed her hand on your forehead when you weren’t feeling well, and she said “God love it.”

I have shared often about Papa’s “ Keep a tight rein”, but I haven’t mentioned in a while that he also liked to
ask my brother and I “Did you learn anything?”  We knew we were supposed to say yes, even if we needed time to figure out what exactly that was.

”No step for a stepper” is a family favorite as is “You came by it honest.”

And then there’s “A minute on your lips, forever on your hips.” That one usually comes up during Thanksgiving.

And so I leave you this evening with one more.

”Everything is going to be all right.”

It really is. I promise.

It may not look like what you thought, and it may not be what you planned, but it really is going to be all right.

Love, Mom

Fall Mantel

IMG_9980

I have been in such a can’t sit still project mode this past month, my husband asked me last Saturday what was making me feel guilty.

Me? Guilty?

Just because I can’t sit still, and I have spray paint fingers (dented and speckled)?

Guilty?

No-

just energized and creative.

Don’t you love it when that happens?

IMG_9964

And so when I found a burlap canvas from Wisteria at the flea market recently  ($1.00),

that flow started and hasn’t stopped.

IMG_9950

Isn’t it fun when that happens?

IMG_9985

I may not be able to walk, and I may be a little paint splattered, but I am having fun ,and that is

the best feeling in the world ( not to be confused with guilty).

It is till in the high 80’s here,

so I wanted something that felt cool.

Grandparent’s Day: Part II

IMG_9916

After little brother walked backed to his class,

big brother’s class walked in a few minutes later.

What to say?

IMG_9921

This oldest grandson is smart,

and funny,

and wise,

and kind.

He smiled when he saw us,

got his tray and sat with his friends.

And then,

as he so often does,

he took my heart and turned it upside down

when he stood up grabbed his tray

and came and sat with us,

without any prompting .

He did it because that is the way he is.

IMG_9924

And then like his little brother-

he drank his chocolate milk

first.

Grandparent’s Day: Part I

IMG_9884

If you were shy like I was when I was little,

you may remember

that feeling of

something surprising happening

and

your mouth getting all funny as you tried

to not smile too big.

Let’s say you’re walking down the hall

to the cafeteria,

with your hands behind your back like the rest of your kindergarten classmates,

and all of a sudden you spot your crazy

grandparents (Us).

They’re smiling and waving and taking lots of pictures

and acting goofy

like they usually do,

so you muster your coolness

and change faces.

IMG_9883

Because you realize

they are following you

to the cafeteria.

So you give up

and get your tray-

even though your grandmother

Ma Do (me) is acting like you are too little to carry it all by yourself-

and Poor Po (my husband) seems to be enjoying

the salad bar offered to all grandparents

IMG_9906

maybe a little too soon

in Ma Do’s opinion.

Anyway, you plop yourself down at a table with your friends

and

start on your chocolate milk and dessert first

and ignore all of the craziness around you.

Dear Daughters: Out of the Ordinary Questions

IMG_9774

Dear Daughters,

One of my favorite things to do

as a grandmother is to

shock your sons/nephews/ and my grandsons

with out of the ordinary questions.

In the photo above I had just asked Mills if he wanted to hop up in the driver’s seat of this roofer’s truck

in our driveway.

IMG_9775

He did- while trying not to smile.

I have also been known to turn to Harrison and say-

“Do you want to drive?”

(Don’t tell his parents.)

We did- together-

in the Love’s convenience store parking lot outside Three Rivers.

Other questions?

*I bought 3 kinds of Blue Bell- how about a bowl of all three?

and-

*Who wants to load the popcorn popper?

It is so much fun!

Love to you all-

Mom
