Growing Gardenias: It’s A Cinch

IMG_8670

Herein lies the moral of this story.

If you struggled for 4 years trying to grow gorgeous,

fragrant gardenias in your yard, in Zone 9,

in deep South Texas,

and if you witnessed multiple gardenia plants
you purchased

TURN BLACK AND DIE

while in your care,

and if you actually heard gardenia plants whisper

while you walked past them in nurseries,

”Please, no, no, not me…not me…don’t pick me…”

then this

It’s a Cinch Message

is for you.

IMG_8669

You simply buy two plants at a reasonable price ($4 each),

without ANY expectations,

adopting a I COULD CARE LESS attitude,

you drive them home,

forget about them,

and then remember to plant them in a shady area,

and they will then bloom.

Who knew?

IMG_8667

Apparently, they even bloomed, and I didn’t notice.

And so dear friends,

the message is a simple one.

INDIFFERENCE.

(yes, I know- I not only talk to my plants,

I have a dysfunctional relationship with them as well…)

It’s a cinch!

  1. My all time favorite flowers! Up here on Central Oregon's high desert I'm not going to grow them - indifference or not! I had some success in the Orlando area .. but I probably hovered too much.

  2. I absolutely LOVE gardenias. When I was growing up that was the flower of choice for corsages for proms, weddings, etc. I had two bushes when we lived in FL and I used to love the smell that permeated the house when they were in bloom. Lovely- xo Diana

  3. That's a cute story and very helpful. Our nursery guy told us to plant in FULL sun...it died! I'm going to try again your way!! Thanks for the tip. Have a great day!

  6. Oh, Laura ~ I may have to try this ~ I have never been successful with Gardenias! I read about possible problems; one thing said "not enough humidity"; the other said "too much humidity" ~ (more likely, here in Swampeast Missouri) ~ whichever the result were the same...and I had it in dappled shade...:(
    You have given me courage!

  7. Laura, when we bought the yellow house 2.5 years ago there was this huge hedge I did not know what it was and I really did not think much of it. I thought I might rip it out with the truck but it bloomed-huge gardenias.Thank god I did not rip it out. I do treat our hedge for white flies 2x a year or it gets moldy leaves and flies all over it. We have mini gardenias in the front as well. I knew what they were in my defense. I am glad your gardenias have thrived.

  8. Gardenias are so fickle! I find planting them with an eastern exposure works pretty well. They don't get all that afternoon Texas sun. But then again indifference is good.:)

  9. hahahahha! I think I am going to try the same approach with my hydrangeas. They never bloom and I take care of them and talk to them. I'm just going to ignore them. I'll let you know how it goes!

Thanks for linking up to the party.

    blessings,

  10. Like men - the more you ignore them - the more they keep coming back!!!

I am definitely taking this attitude with my plants from now on!

So glad you joined our Cinch party.
