If you are
‘of an age’,
and you were raised with the same basic guidelines as I was,
and sometimes…
as a child/middle-aged woman you wanted something
you could not have…
you may have been warned not
to get ‘swelled up’, as my mother would say.
That warning usually began,
as my frown was forming,
with-
“Laura Ellen?”
Now I know the picture I have painted here
(of swelling up)
isn’t pretty,
but the word is perfect.
Lately, in all of my
‘of an age’ glory,
I have been swelled up at the flea market.
If you are a junker/thrifter, you know what I mean.
My favorite vendor keeps saving boxes of amazing things
for other people,
or
I see something in someone else’s cart that makes me hyperventilate,
or
I am a day late.
Last week was no different.
(swellingswellingswellingswelling)
Until I turned the corner and saw this.
Big Daddy (above) was sitting on the ground under a table full of shoes.
My Academy Award self immediately changed my swelled up expression
to one of disinterest.
I nonchalantly moseyed over.
The first thing I checked?
1. Does it have all of its feet?
Check.
2. What does its hallmark say?
No hallmark. Hmmm.
3. Is it heavy?
Yes.
4. Is the price right?
Yes, $20, but she said she would take $18.
And most importantly???
5. Would it sooth my swelled up heart?
Absolutely.

I am all swelled up over this whole room!! LOVE IT and love all the pretties that fill it!
ReplyDeleteI would say that it was a fruitful deflating, but that doesn't sound right! Glad your swelled up self just turned in to swell! Ok, I'll stop now! ;-)
ReplyDeleteKat :)
omgoodness ... I have my coffee pot on a tray that could be its first cousin!!
ReplyDeletethankas so much for linking
Woo-hoo! This is a home run in my book. And thank goodness I know what your vehicle looks like and I could see it through your window because you've made some really cool changes in your sitting area and I didn't recognize it. So fun!!

The visual I had of a pouting child was much better than the one I thought I was going to have of a middle aged ankle.
ReplyDeleteNice score!

What a gorgeous find! I love it with the the other pieces on top of it. Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteSee, we all have our turn to get something wonderful and that tray is WONDERFUL! So happy you found it and it looks great in your home.

ReplyDeleteWell that is just beautiful and I just love it, I know sometimes it hit or miss at our Flea Market.
ReplyDeleteI'm in love. It's a beauty.
ReplyDeleteYou're right! I remember hearing that. As well as a slew of other old saying. Guess that makes us old?
ReplyDeleteBrenda
I have not heard that expression in years ! :-D You did good on the tray.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your evening.
That tray's identical twin is sitting under my tea service. It was a wedding gift all those years ago.
ReplyDeletesoo happy you found it...I couldn't stand to know you were "swelled up"...
ReplyDeleteThat is ONE SWELL piece! I LOVE it! xo Diana
ReplyDeleteGreat find. And at $18, a steal. I have a hard time passing up any silver, so that would have gone home with me for sure.
ReplyDeleteNot only am I of that age...but I often heard those words "Laura Ellen"
ReplyDeleteas that is my name also and that is what my Dad would say in his sternest voice whenever I was on thin ice! :)
That tray is gorgeous! :)
Oh my gosh, Laura, that is so worth swelling up for! That is just gorgeous and what a deal, ahem, steal!!! A huge victory in my book!
ReplyDeleteHugs!
Nancy
I think I have one too!! seems we all think alike!
ReplyDeleteWhat great luck...it's beautiful. Hubby and I took a day trip last weekend to look for some antique malls and/or flea markets but we came up empty handed. All we could find were high end antique stores and they are no fun!
ReplyDeleteA lovely find Laura... I think Candy and I may do a little "swelling up" tomorrow... yes.. I know the feeling!
ReplyDeleteHi Laura, This is a beautiful tray! Isn't it fun when you find something hiding under a table?
ReplyDeleteWhoa! Big Daddy is one hunk of beautiful silver! What a great find...thanks for sharing the story and the pictures with us.
ReplyDeleteForget being all 'swelled up'...
ReplyDeleteI love how you played it cool and 'moseyed over'...
Now that WAS cool.
Love the tray and the room.
It looks swell.
