Dear Daughters: Cravings 2012

IMGP1007

Dear Daughters,

I have had a craving , obsession desire of sorts for months now.

It is really twofold.

I am obsessed with learning to make crocheted dish cloths,

and I want to learn to knit.

I have my supplies.

In fact, I have lots of supplies,

that I apparently

CRAVED.

P1000565

The plastic container of knitting needles, you may remember,

is a flea market find.

I wrote about them and their

imagined owner here.

So here’s the deal.

This may

just be a matter of semantics ,

but bear with me.

Together let’s  look for what we

long to do,

yearn to do-

rather than what we crave.

In fact, I’ll start.

”I long to learn to knit and make crocheted dish cloths.”

Better, right?

Craving is a funky little word that creates an

off the hook amnesty none of us can afford to

maintain.

Whatever its seemingly harmless origin,

(Christmas fudge and tamales, shopping and searching)

a booby prize waits at the end.

I think as my dear friend Janetta used to say,

we have to substitute something for whatever

cravings

have us girded up (as Papa would say).

Today I am going to learn to make crocheted

dish cloths, that I have longed to make for months now.

I hope you find your longing too.

Love, Mom

  2. I have always been in awe of people that can knit and crochet...I can crochet a little but not enough to actually make anything...hmmm I might just have to try it again...you give me inspiration

  3. That is wonderful. I love to crochet. I especially love to crochet dish cloths. You can make them in a relatively short time and you have the instant satisfaction of saying...'hey, I made this.' when it is finished. I only use my crocheted cloths now. I save my pennies for new towels for the kitchen in complimentary colors...but for dish cloths- I MAKE MY OWN!

I tell ya-- I want to learn to TAT.
I hope to do that in 2012

  4. I know you can do it. My daughter and I tried to teach ourselves to crochet last summer and it was fun and funny but alas we cannot do it.

  5. Your stash looks like mine, except it's mostly for scrapbooking which I seem to get around too only very seldom. I need to learn to stop and smell the roses! My SIL's mother-in-law used to make those crocheted dishclothes and they are wonderful. Something so sweet and special about them. Hope you...and your daughters...get all your cravings, wishes, whatevers in 2010.

  7. But what if one of my cravings are your posts. What am I supposed to do about that? BTW...they never end with a booby prize...only a flourish and a back flip.

  9. Dear Marilyn, Just begin! (Thats my word for the year) Please share your progress too. I have been wanting to learn as well but since I neither knit or crochet I have not begun. Must remedy that!

  10. Laughing all the way to my closet full of cotton yarn that I collected while going through this obsession you're in right now. In fact I was so into it that my son created his own term for my crocheting...he called it "making more squares". He'd come home from school and see me crocheting and say; "oh! you're making more squares" or someone would ask him what his mom did; meaning as a career, but he was smartly say; "she makes squares!" what a stinker! but that's fine, I now know how to crochet even if it's just a square. And guess how I learned? YouTube! Yep!

  11. Lovely post! Really made me think about what I'm really longing for versus what is a craving that can pass. Thank you for sharing. Happy New Year! Hope you're having a grand evening. Toodles, Kathryn @TheDedicatedHouse
