Cart Before the Horse Decorating

I know there are valid steps in the process
of  creating a beautiful
to the eye of the beholder home.

I just don’t operate that way.

I have just christened what I do as

Cart Before the Horse Decorating.
Here is how it works.

* I didn’t want to invest another dime in our 30 year old

sofa because it has sinkholes to China,
but when the Crate and Barrel Outlet had olive green velveteen pillows for $5.99,
I became a fan (of the pillows).

We can now sink in elegant comfort.

*When  I had one of those middle-aged spark plug kind of thoughts driving down the road of
“I want a subdued leopard rug in front of the living room couch!”,
I decided to ignore the worn too small rug that is there temporarily.
I am now on a quest for a leopard rug that doesn’t look like a Halloween costume.

*When a lady at a junk store in a neighboring town could not find the glass top that went with the heavy brass

coffee table base I  had to have,
and she said,
“Senora, you want this one?”

Of course I said yes- even though it doesn’t fit.

It is sort of like creating my own reality.

Which is so much fun!
***

And so in the interest of full disclosure,
I see some things in the photo that need
changing.

*the couch still needs to be replaced
*the lamps need to be replaced with something metal
*the coffee table needs an anchor like books or something with more color

*the rug has to go

As soon as I buy my Thanksgiving groceries,
have my grandsons for a visit,
decorate the house for Christmas,
Christmas shop,
and change my mind 10 times,
I’ll post after photos!

  1. Is there any other kind of decorating? That always seems to be my method, too! I love the pillows and your wingback chairs.

  2. What a great post, I am exactly like you. I decorate on a whim...well rather I did..it tends to be expensive that way. I have now narrowed my taste down and upcycling the must keep and triple check the must haves. Good Luck and Happy visiting with your family.

  4. Sometimes I get the craziest ideas about decorating my home. Sometimes I talk myself out of it, sometimes not! I think your living room looks lovely but I know how we always long for change.

  7. I like the way you think, besides, I too can just see a leopard skin rug. then when someone sits down they'll be so wowwed by the rug they won't notice they're in China! xoxo

  8. just thinkin'.....what if you painted the walls SW Mossy Gold - perhaps everything else could stay the same. Since I've not seen this room in person - natural light, flow of the house, I refuse to give this as my final answer - just thinkin'

  9. Crate and Barrel Outlet? And you did not pick up one of their sofas? I understand we hang onto our sinking sofas too. I have back pain from climbing out. The rug will look wonderful.

  10. Is that wrong? That's the way I roll too. Are we ever actually finished? Then the fun would be over. I hear ya, but it looks great to me.

  11. Your home is beautiful and so put-together. Wouldn't have guessed you put things together so haphazardly. :) Hope you find the perfect rug! What a fun quest.

  15. Well, I think it looks great 'before' so don't change too much!

  16. I think I can subscribe to your method. I like cart before the horse. Absolutely! The decorating equivalent of duct tape and baling wire. And like you say, if all else fails, try a little white spray paint. You're preaching the gospel!

  17. Made in the South mentioned you in her blog and I found that I had to scoot on over here to meet you. Yeap, you are a hoot and found your blog to be delightfully funny. So, I am a new follower.

  18. One more thing.....you are looking for a leopard rug and I have been seeking leopard throw pillows for months now. Of course, if you weren't looking for them they would be staring you in the face in every store you went. Funny how that works......frustration sets in for me instead of the thrill of the hunt esp. when I say to myself "well, I guess these will do" and get home & they still are the beloved leopard pillows I want. OH WELL!
