Dear Daughters,
After working in the yard until dark,
I came inside to fix supper
and I thought of you
in your respective kitchens.
You come from a long line of good cooks ,
who made cooking supper
into an art,
but that is not my point.
Here is my spin on that task.
There is only one thing
that will make cooking supper easy,
night after night,
when you are tired,
and you just can’t face another
complicated task.
Have something thawed.
It is that simple.
No amount of lists, or menus, or special recipes
empowered me more than
opening the freezer,
as I headed out the door,
and throwing something in the sink to thaw.
It is that simple.
By doing that one simple thing,
I was in the game.
Campari tomatoes (these are wonderful and taste home grown)
green onions (for Dad)
hamburger patties with melted cheddar cheese
grilled red onions and mushrooms
and at the last minute
I steamed broccoli, cauliflower, and carrots.
Done.
Love you,
Mom
Oooh, thank you! I sure don't like coming in from work and making supper! That sounds easy enough.
ReplyDeleteMMM, this dinner sounds YUMMY!!! I love grilled or roasted (or steamed ) veggies!!!!
ReplyDeleteyou nailed it sista'
ReplyDeleteWhere Women Cook has my daughter on the cover this month

These are my favorite posts...I envy the relationship you have with your girls. The food looks simply delicious!

ReplyDeletewhat a good mommy!
ReplyDeleteThis is soooo sweet. Love it. :)
ReplyDeleteWho knew a hamburger patty could look this good? What great and simple advice, Laura. Even if you don't know how you're going to cook it, just taking it out to thaw gets the ball rolling!
ReplyDeleteThat is the TRUTH! I am the same way!!! I also love a crock pot during the cold winter months-where I can just set it on in the morning and know I will come home to a "meal in minutes" after a cold day's work!
ReplyDeleteThis time of year we do lots of fresh salads, too...I need to get the grill out and pre-grill & freeze a bunch of meat again! Hugs- Diana
You have a wonderful way with food preparation. Your daughters were lucky to have you for a mom!
ReplyDeleteThat looks so good.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your weekend.
That's the best looking hamburger patty I've seen! I'd take that anytime! And, of course, it looks even better on that blue transferware plate.

How I wish I could buy tomatoes in our area that look that delicious! Even the couple of local farmers market have the hard green balls they call tomatoes. Everything look yummy, Laura.

I find the younger generation doesn't put that much in the freezer to thaw. We put up vegetables every summer so that we have them all winter long. We also go to a wonderful meat market and stock up on what we'll need for the next month or so. I could not have made it without my freezer. Anything to make cooking easier after a long day at work...priceless!
ReplyDeletegreat hint...food looks yummy
ReplyDeleteWhen you are vegetarian, there is nothing to thaw, and cooking is always easy. Everything is fresh and cooks up within 20-30 minutes -- at least the way I cook it does. :) I have recipes that I go to again and again. Just eating lunch now, crusty Mediterranean bread topped with olive oil, seasonings and mozzarella along with a salad of halved cherry tomatoes with cilantro and onion, olive oil & lemon juice as a dressing, salt, pepper and garlic powder to taste. Yum! Even the 12 year old will happily eat this, minus the onions and cilantro. Hope your day is a good one. :) Tammy
ReplyDeleteOh yum. Laura!! Really looks good.. and healthy.
ReplyDeleteAny more idea? I need them.
Have a super weekend.
Hugs,

That's one hint I never could master. I'd always forget to throw dinner in the sink! Thank goodness for Party Pups!

Sounds YUMMY and looks soooo tasty! I love onions and put them in and with about everything I cook! Whenever I have them cooking, my husband ALWAYS says... "something is smelling good in here"! It's just the onions!
ReplyDeleteHave a blessed day dear Laura! HUGS!
How often I've come home from work and realised that I'd not taken anything out as I left in the morning. Such a simple thing - great tip for your daughters!
ReplyDeleteEven though I "know" your not talking to me. I dont have my mother, so I feel this is something she would do (think of me in my kitchen) and say to me. So Thanks.
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet, loving, and helpful post for your girls. Your dinner looks devine.
ReplyDeleteAMEN! Dinner looks so delish. Your posts to your daughters are priceless! I so love your blog. xoxo
