Working Class Pyrex and Chocolate Sheet Cake

IMG_3858

Text message conversation:

Me to my nephew Trey:  What is your favorite dessert?

Trey:  Chocolate cake.

Me:  I’ll bring one to the game Tuesday.

Trey:  Thank you Aunt Laura.

(I wish I had a room service cart with white linens I could push into the game.

That would really push the other men in my family-

my husband, my father, and my brother- over some fine edge.

That makes me laugh thinking about it.

Crazy Aunt Laura.)

I used Pioneer Woman’s Chocolate Sheet Cake recipe.

It is delicious and absolutely no fail .

During the reading, measuring, and mixing process,

I wished for a miner’s head lamp.

Can you all see clearly when reading a cookbook these days?

I then began to day dream about the
sturdiness of working class

Pyrex.

I am a proud Pyrex user.

Note to Daughters:  I know so many cooking utensils in

today’s complicated world have become designer in nature,

but that is not your legacy.

So relax, spend less, and let that mumbo jumbo go.

That is not who we are.

PS.  Sift your confectioner’s sugar and Hershey’s cocoa ( the working class cocoa brand).

You will be amazed at the difference.

And finally, I will never forget one of my first

dry’ ingredient baking lessons from my mother:

leveling the flour off the top of the measuring cup with the straight edge of a knife.

Life is good, and I am having fun.

  2. Hey Laura- You can't read because it is dark? Uhhh. maybe you could turn the lights on? okay..slap me...but just once...

I have made that sheet cake many times. Isn't that the greatest in the world...and I am with you...use the old sifter and Hersheys cocoa. I grew up not too far from Hershey, PA...so I, of course, would not use anything else. The whole town smells like chocolate (seriously) AND they have a wonderful amusement ride park there.

Good cooking just never changes, does it? Sure wish I could sit down with Crazy Aunt Laura and have a piece of cake...or at least watch from the bleachers while you pushed it in on a cart...that would be over the top! Hugs- Diana

  6. The kids laugh at me because I cook with the $1.99 readers perched on the end of my nose - can't see to stir out the lumps otherwise.

  8. Laura, you crack me up! I love your wit. Yes, we don't have to have gourmet everything and all the latest cooking utensils to bake and cook well.

Love your blue and white canisters. Looks great with your new header. You can't beat blue and white and chocolate. You know the wise proverb that says there is nothing new under the sun- that chocolate sheet cake has been around for years. I love how Ree has taken old recipes and written them in her style with pictures so the younger generation takes notice. I like pictures too!

  10. I watched my mother do the same thing when measuring out flour. Chocolate cake sounds yummy. I'm on Weight Watchers and would love a huge slab of it. Maybe in a couple of months I'll treat myself.

  11. I am now on the hunt for a room service cart for you. When I find one, it will be my gift to you...if you promise to take photos of the faces when you wheel it in.

P.S. Why is it called Texas sheet cake? It's a favorite around this hill!

  12. Your cake looks awesome - but because I warded off sugar for new years - you could not trust me to just one piece! Love your flour, sugar, jars!

  15. When I sew by hand, I have to take off my bifocals now because I can't see close up any more, Laura. It just keeps going downhill! I love your lively post, full of fun and chocolate and pretty pictures! (Hey, I was at Hobby Lobby this morning and they have blue and white ceramics similar to that in your post 1/2 price!)

  22. Oh, my grandmother always used a knife blade to level off her flour. What memories! And, you know, I love Ree! She's the best and I can't wait to read her new book that came out yesterday.

Always love stopping by! Sunshine and rainbows to you!
