Not a One-Handed Turn

bus

(School buses (one of my favorite things) at a recent basketball tournament.)

Life moves forward, even during the holidays.

It is that juggling at times that gets all of the balls out of order,

but it is that juggling that makes it great fun as well.

Basketball season has started for my nephew, and we are avid fans.

Traveling to a recent tournament in Driscoll (Texas), with my father riding shotgun, and my

recuperating husband in the back seat,

my father gifted me with a statement so

him,

so profound,

I wanted to share it with you.

He has coined many phrases that my brother and I

hold onto as touchstones for living our lives.

“Keep a tight rein.”

“Did you learn anything?”

and the simple admonition

“You don’t have any business… (fill in the blank).”

As I drove, he first began with reminiscing , as he looked out the window,

about farming here or there,

buying land here,

selling it to move there,

he and mother living over that hill,

driving a maintainer and building highways here and there,

delivering fresh milk from their cows that he and his brother Rich had

milked early each morning,

and

riding horseback onto the Laureles division of the King Ranch

to visit his father, who was working there.

After a few miles of comfortable silence,

apparently my driving caught his attention,

as I was about to reach Riviera,

on the Falfurrias highway.

And he said:

“Sister.”

Me: “Yes sir?”

“That’s not a one- handed turn.”

  2. I sure do like your Daddy! You are blessed to still have him. I have so many questions that I would ask my Daddy especially about his time during the war.

Hope your husband is much better.

I like anything you write, Laura. Your observations and experiences are very interesting.

    Pretty Christmas header!

  6. Aren't fathers wonderful. Your dad sounds like a great guy. My dad has been gone five years now and I still miss him. They have a way of always being our dad no matter how old we get.

  8. LOL~~! Oh I love it! It makes me so miss my father!

His most famous saying was- Better an old man's darling than a young man's wife!. He was almost 50 when he married my mother who was 18 years younger. Hugs-Diana

  18. One of those "never forget moments." My Grandmother had more "sayings" when I was growing up and I love remembering them.

Blessings for a beautiful holiday season!

  19. Sounds like your father is a very wise man:) I don't think many of the younger generation use words of wisdom like our parents & grandparents did.

  21. Laura, you should
    start writing each
    and every one down
    that you can remember
    and then add to it
    as new advice comes
    along. What a great
    book and a wonderful
    legacy for you and
    future generations of
    your family. Love it!
