Faux Twitter and the Geek Squad

Tuesday :

9:00 am       Go to Best Buy with crashing laptop.

9:01 am       Trail cord in parking lot for dramatic effect.

9:05 am       Get in line at Geek Squad counter, dramatically holding laptop and trailing cord.

9:10 am       Describe symptoms to Geek Squad person.

9:15 am       Determine that said Geek Squad person is not impressed with my explanation that “…the blue light won’t stay on and then the screen turns black.”

9:30 am       Give hairy eyeball looks, honed from 32 years of teaching high school students (who are probably all working for the Geek Squad).

9:40 am       Geek squad person not impressed.  I am devastated that I have lost my glare.  Will practice on husband more consistently.

9:50 am       Listen to expensive options- all with no guarantees. Try to glare one more time. Give up.

10:00 am      Bought new laptop which was on sale and less than the total of all past and projected repair costs and the national deficit.

10:05 am      Do my brand of math, which I have labeled ‘Laura’s Justification Mathematical Formula for Whatever You Need to Buy at that Moment’.

10:20 am       Leave Best Buy with new laptop and an old broken laptop, feeling snookered and confused and realizing that glares might not seem as effective when the ‘glarer’ is wearing yard clothes and a chip clip in her hair.

***

I am typing this on my husband’s laptop.  Stay tuned for tomorrow’s faux twitter account of the Geek Squad coming to my house.

  1. Laughing so hard at this post! I bought my husband a new laptop when he retired. I had trouble getting the security software to load, took it back to Best Buy (the day after I bought the laptop) and tried to get them to load it! They were going to charge me and I left Mad, Mad, Mad dragging my cord... hehe! Came home and loaded it myself successfully!

Hope you love your new laptop! HUGS!

  3. Oh dear. I am full of disdain for those nerds. Hugs Laura. I bought and installed an external hard drive. Now understanding it is another matter entirely.

    hang in there♥olive

  4. I'm sooo sorry - and soooo laughing my head off!! I've been in your place (unfortunately) and now have not one, not two, but three hard drives guarding my very valuable family photos....i.e. the hard drive in my PC (on which my pictures are saved in two duplicate files) but then again on two separate hard drives. Yeah - I'd be that farmer that wears a belt AND suspenders.

Good luck with the Geek Squad :-)

  5. I am sorry and I can so relate!!! A year ago April I trudged into to BB with emachine in a cart. However, I did not buy from them - the geek sq. person was to "wishy washy", so took my emachine, made note of BB prices, went to office depot and spent my money.
How did we ever survive without out computers?!?! :-D

  8. L.B.,
I do believe the chip clip in your hair trumps glitter in my teeth!
It's so frustrating. All that time I was without mine...seems all it needed was a new power source. Who'd a thought it!
I like the idea of faux twittering...consider me a follower!

  9. My 7 year old computer is dying, I think. I'm going to try out a new one. May never be able to get back to blogging etc.

  10. Oh My GOSH, you have me laughing out loud!!! "The hairy eyeball", Hysterical!! I could see it all, Laura. I always run a video in my mind as you are telling your stories. You're brave though, I just go whine at my husband. He gets tired of me and eventually it gets fixed!
    xoxo,
    Debra

  11. You're not losing it - your hairy eyeball look probably still works on normal human beings - but we know that the Geek Squad is made up of clones from another galaxy.

  12. There is nothing more maddening than pulling out all your "powers" and having them fail you!!! But I imagine the Geek Squad is a tough audience. I'm sure they've seen and heard everything. I'm sure your "powers" will work on less hardened people.

  13. Laughing out loud! A chip clip is a legitimate fashion accessory. Hoping for technology success in your future!

  14. Laughing at your funny post. But I wouldn't buy anything from Best Buy.

  15. Great post! I've had my own lap top crash lately too. May I suggest buying the extended warranty. These stupid things don't seem to last too long for some reason. Love your brand of math. Right up my alley. And faux Twittering. Cool!

  16. You crack me up!! Love your post. Hope everything goes will with Best Buy - I've not heard good things about their return or warranty policy. Lots of hidden rules and charges.

  17. You are hysterical my friend. And knowing you well, I can exactly picture you there!!!

  18. I was feeling your pain...really in the moment of misery right there with you and then...the chip clip in the hair comment made me snort!

I then lost all ability to feel sorry for you any longer because.... you still had your sense of humor. Which made me smile and praise that you got over that mountain. whew!

Maybe Geeks are "glare resistant" *snort*

  19. OH now I know that teacher look. Works like a charm on my daughter and other kids. I even freaked my SIL out with it. Man! I can't believe it didn't work on the Geek Squad. Hope you enjoy your new laptop.

  21. I found your blog just in time for a good laugh--not at your problem but in the description of said problem. Ummm, what's an external hard drive? Hope things get back on track/online soon.

    Best,
    Bonnie

  22. Laura, I really needed this! I just had the same thing happen--black screen. Had to buy new computer too and still trying to get to all my old "stuff" even after help from Geek Squad! Keep me posted!

  23. Hilarious post! lol You must have gotten a newbie Geek, because for $99., Best Buy will back up everything on your computer, and put it on a CD! They can do it even if it is crashed, just in case it can't be repaired. Also, all photos on our blogs are also on Picassa! Go there and, you can download them. Anyway, congrats on your new toy!
