Dear Daughters: Dad, His Parrilla, and Saturday Afternoon

IMG_1858

Dear Daughters:

Remember Dad’s parrilla (grill) that I had built for him last summer?

This afternoon after we worked on different projects (he said I needed to stop thinking of projects),

he grilled chicken, ribs, and sausage-

just a little of each- for the two of us.

And because I asked him to, he made a pot of beans.

His one stipulation?

He needed to watch Dallas play at 7:00 pm.

So we sat outside – even though it was hot, and I brought this out of my garden shed.

My IPod was playing,

Dad was saying

Turn it up,”

and all was right in my world.

I really am a woman of simple needs.

I just have complicated thoughts!

It may not make sense now, but a time really does come when you are still 18 years old in a much older body.

That is why when the song you are hearing right now started to play,

I started to dance on the crushed limestone patio with my garden hat on .

My 18 year old inner child was saying

Woo Hoo.

Dad understands.

I hope you always have someone in your life who understands that you will always be 18.

Love, Mom

Have a great weekend!

  1. Now Laura, this really is what life is all about. Boy do I adore you and your simple needs!!! I think you and I would be the best of buds if I only lived closer. You 'get' what is most important in this life. Someone to love and love you back...great food...and a great song...what more could we ask for than this???
    Big Hugs...

  2. I hear ya, Laura! Wish I had been able to hear that tune playing... I would have be-bopped right down our lane, tapped on your door, and danced clear to your back yard. So watch out the next time you take that iPod out... your crazy neighbor will be tapping on your door! (I'm practicing right now... cute with my sling!)
    Huggers,
    Karen

Isn't it the greatest freedom when we come to the point in our life where all it takes is the little things to make us happy and someone who "gets" us to share in it!

P.S. I bet you can still shake your groove thang!

  12. Laura-I know exactly what you mean! Isn't it the strangest thing to look in the mirror and see a person that looks so much older than you feel? (well at least in MY case). When did that happen? When did our bodies by pass our spirit and age around our soul? I dunno...I think you wrote a beautiful message to your daughters. I think that is what all mothers wish for, hope for, pray for. Thanks for the smile and the "boost" this morning- Diana

I love it Laura..love to listen to music...hubby and I go to a little place with a jukebox that has songs we grew up on...I put in $6 and get to play 14 songs...we listen...and talk..sing along...bebop to the beat...and talk about our day...or past memories..and in our heads we are still 18...and if we don't put on our glasses we still look 18

  16. Oh Laura, that goodness for times like this, they keep us young! I really can picture you dancing to the music, dear friend, just too cute! Music and dancing are a big part of my life, even if it's at home and sometimes by myself! My ipod is always close by and at times in my pocket and plugged into my ears!

    Keep on dancing!

  17. Laura, I had to chuckle when your husband said you needed to stop thinking of projects! That is a frequent scene at our house. We have also used the fan on the porch too. Yes, certain songs change our mood instantly and music is uplifting. What a nice evening you described.

  19. Hi Laura...

My friend, I loved this post...the letter to your daughter's says it all! I feel exactly the same way! I was coming by to say thank you for the sweet birthday well wishes that you left for me. I just turned 54...but mentally I'm just in my late 20's! Hehe! I can completely relate and I'm also very thankful to have a loving companion that understands!!! Sounds like you and your honey had a blast!!!

Again, thank you so much for coming by and leaving such a sweet note! I really enjoyed your visit, Laura!

    Warmest wishes,
