Daughter Watching and a Gift

photo-1

This past Saturday afternoon, while taking advantage of some exploring time with two of my daughters in Katy, Texas (before a family wedding that evening), I was given the gift of

daughter watching.

As we moved in and out of antique stores, Daughters #2 and #3 began to shop intently, while daughter #1 checked in frequently by phone-

as in “where are you now?”

As I watched Katherine (#3) walk up to the counter holding a milk glass punch bowl and 9 cups,

I started to smile.

I decided I would just plop myself down and watch things unfold.

She had already placed 6 Jadeite plates near the register.

The third item she found was this.

That evening at the reception, as the DJ played one great song after another, and a particularly great one began to play,

I turned to my husband and said,

“Here they come.”

“Who?”, he asked.

“Your girls (all three).”

  “They’re getting ready to dance.”

And I smiled some more.

  1. What a great post! When my daughter called me all excited to tell me she had bought the "cutest" napkin rings...I knew I'd done my job pretty darn well!

Looks like you all had a wonderful day and great evening!

  6. Such a true post. It is so fun to watch. I love the phone calls when we talk about shams and duvets and how she is gonna decorate her new home with her new husband. xoxo

  7. Laura, I am totally drooling over that punch bowl. My mother had one and for some reason it is missing. I am on a search.
Ah, yes... the girls dancing. That's one neat thing that daughters and mothers do together. I've watched y'all before and so fun to watch... and of course makes me wish for a daughter.
    I'm sure y'all had a great time!

  8. I'm a daughter-watcher. Today we had dinner at her little place...just the two of us and then we watched Austen's Persuasion (BBC version). HEAVEN. Girls rule.

Now...I wanna see that shade when you are done! YOU CAN DO THIS!

  9. I love to daughter-watch, even though I only have one to watch. My daughter-less sister is always telling me how lucky I am to have a daughter, and I have to agree with her.

  10. AND I am smiling here... sitting on my sofa with my morning coffee:) I can just see you sitting there watching them and smiling! Then at the reception to watch them come for their Dad to dance... be still my heart:)

Love this story Laura! Thanks for sharing, HUGS!

  11. Love this post. Isn't it amazing that we just "know." There's nothing more fun (and noisy)than watching my girls come together.

  12. While daughter watching, do you ever pinch yourself to make sure it's real? Sometimes I even forget to breathe!

P.S. A leaf really doesn't fall very far from the tree judging by the purchases.

  15. What a great post Laura, isn't it awesome to see them end up loving the things we do! Amazing how that happens! It's the best "watching" there is in life.

  18. One of my favorite
    pastimes.....
    and I only have one!
    And she already has
    "the bug." Paid for
    her own vintage mug
    that she saw when we
    were shopping Tues....and
    she's only 15! I was
    thinking that this would
    be a good Christmas to
    get her a hope chest.
    {I wonder if they still
    make them?} Not so much
    for "when I get married"
as for "when I'm out on
    my own...." She's bursting
    out of her little room,
    already, with all of her
    collecting and treasures : )
    Happy Thursday, Laura!
    xx Suzanne

  21. Well, indeed we are kindred spirits...and neighbors, of a sort. I'm in Oklahoma City. I also spent yesterday shopping with my precious daughter, seeking a few 'new' pieces for a 'new'(to her) craftsman bungalow; her husband and she just completed a move. She loves old houses and decorating with treasures from her great-grandmother. Makes my day every time I'm with her. Thank you for the kind comments on my post. Cherry Kay

  22. I had something similar happen today~ but mine was son watching. We have 3 sons, 23,21 and 18. We are building a new home and just started . Today we poured the footings and all three boys were shoveling and working. It was so wonderful to watch my boys all working together and having fun. Great post!
    Have a pretty day!

  26. My own three daughters are spread to the four winds, and I see them together so rarely. The last time was this past January for my father-in-law's funeral ... not a happy occasion such as yours. I treasure my daughters, and the women they have become.

What a wonderful post!! Thanks for the feeling.
