Casting in the Rain

IMG_1358

First of all, thank you for your prayers.  We are doing well.

Other than no electricity for most of yesterday (and I will never do that again without a battery operated fan- thank you Marguerite for that tip), and a new roof that leaked , all is well.

The brush you see along our street was actually trimmed to free power lines.

Secondly, I want to thank my neighbor Karen of Ladybug Creek . Ladybug Creek is her wonderful blog.

Although she lost electricity as well, she offered us a place to stay, she asked about my father (who lives next door to her), she asked about our daughter Lauren, and she invited us over.

By that point our roof was leaking, and we couldn’t leave.

Thank you dear Karen.

Now for true confession.

During a rain spell that wasn’t that fierce, it dawned on me that I should put out some lawn fertilizer.

So…

I happily went out in the rain, grabbed two bags of inexpensive fertilizer I bought at KMart, put them in my wheelbarrow and started casting .

In the meantime, my husband and father were sitting on our front porch drinking iced tea and watching the storm.

I wish I had a picture of their faces as I rounded the corner with that wheelbarrow.

As I started manually casting fertilizer in the rain,

I am sure my father was thinking

“What is THAT girl doing?”

He didn’t comment, but as he was pulling out of our driveway, iced tea in hand, I saw him slowly stop and pull back in.

Through his front passenger window, this is what I heard .

Daddy:  “Sister?”

Me:  “Yes sir?”  (mopping rain out of my face, smiling to beat the band…)

Daddy: “Do it like this.” (swinging his arm horizontally).

  1. I am so laughing at the thought of you out casting your fertilizer in the rain. I've done the same thing! It's also a great time to put out fresh mulch. :)

I've been wondering how it's going there. Glad for the update. I have an aunt and uncle who live in Lake Jackson. Need to check on them.

  3. Glad it was not as bad a predicted. My sister is flying home to Houston today and hopefully will not experience too much turbulence.
Your post brought tears to my eyes...funny tears of you casting in the rain and sappy tears of your sweet father telling you how to do it. So much like me and my dad. Kindred spirits we are!

  4. ROFL! I can just hear my own dad saying that!
Thought about you last night and wondered how you were doing - glad it's mostly rain, and hoepfully the contractor or insurance will cover that roof leak.

Yikes ... glad to hear the storm was mostly rain, and I hope that your roof is fixed soon, and your JUICE back on.
A battery operated fan ... now that's brilliant.

  6. Oh, Laura.. I am renaming you "Girl with the Grit". David read your blog this morning and boy did that backfire. He wanted to know why I didn't get out and do the same thing. Thank you very much, Laura!! lol I'm telling you I can just see the two "J"s in your life sitting out on the porch watching you cast fertilizer. Wish I had a picture of that.
Glad you took a picture though of the tree pruning that was going on all day on our street. Amazing! These men were working in hard rain too.
Our door is always open, Laura. This thing isn't over yet.

PS - David says he has a fertilizer dispenser next time. I'm sure he'll take a glass of ice tea and a seat on the porch too. lol

  8. I thought you are referring to a fishing trip, as some fish become so active in rains and grab anything in sight. Not bad idea casting fertiliser in the rain, otherwise we would be sitting down staring and counting the number of rain droplets... ~bangchik

  11. Well, you must have done good. There is nothing like that Gulf coast heat and humidity. Usually, the hurricanes are when the neighbors get to visit and/or meet one another.

  15. Oh, Laura...you are just too cute. Fertilizing in the rain, always thinking ahead. Imagine that on the news.

So sorry about your roof and power. Up here in the Midwest, there are a lot of people praying for you guys! Stay dry.

  16. L.B., you knock me out! Only you would decide a hurricane is the perfect time to fertilize. No time like the present...right?
    Your daddy is a pip!
I'm sorry your roof leaked, but as long as it is still on top, that's a good thing.

P.S. I'm still waiting on that LHOTTP book!

  18. Laura you are hilarious! I think the last thing on my mind when a hurricane is coming, would be my lawn! Please don't tell me that there was lightening too. If so, I will come over there myself and kick you. (just kidding(kind of))
I'm happy to hear that you are safe. I'm so sorry about the roof.

  20. You crack me up! I actually put some fertilizer on my plants yesterday too in anticipation of rain. And boy are we sure getting some rain right now. I'm in Houston but grew up in Lake Jackson so am very familiar with hurricanes. How far south are you? I've have some of the best time at post-hurricane get togethers out in the yard. Hope your roof issues get taken care of soon. :)

  21. We bought one of those rolling thingys for fertilizing, but I still prefer to just sling it out!

  24. Laura, glad everyone is okay!
Two nights before I went to Savannah, we had storms and tornadoes go through our area. Our power went out and at 9:30PM it was lighter outside than in {we live pretty far North} so I
got out my trimmers and went to work dead-heading my rosebush. So, I'm as crazy as you are : ) I just read your last post. The B&B where I stayed had afternoon tea and they served it outof a tilting pot very much like this one! I left there thinking, "Gotta have one of THOSE!" So hooray for you for finding one, and at such a great price, too! xx Suzanne

  25. Hi Laura! I've been wondering if you had gotten hit with Hurrican Alex. We are getting tons of rain in my part of Texas. West Texas. I'm thankful for the rain because it has been really hot and dry here. Whew!
I giggled as I read that you got the wheelbarrow and started throwing fertilizer while it rain! Ha ha! That sounds like something I would do! I defintely would! LOL Before you know it, the grass will be so pretty and green. :)
Hoping you weren't without electricity for too long and what a nice neighbor you have. :)
    Take care.
