Today during a visit to LuLu B’s in Dallas ( a great, funky consignment shop with 2 locations), I fell in love with all things gold.
While Katherine was buying white glossy wrought iron nesting tables, I was staring at these dishes.
I stared A LONG TIME.
Do any of us need more dishes?
Nooooooo…
Step away from the dishes.
Instead enjoy a flashback while listening to a 60’s radio station on this stereo.
Flashback:
It is sometime in the early 60’s on the Santa Rosa Ranch , located outside Riviera, Texas.
My parents are getting ready for a dance, probably at Hubert’s Dance Land.
They are going to stop by the house of some friends first.
While they are getting ready and Ray Charles is playing on the stereo, my father calls down the hall:
“Sister?”
“Yes sir?”
“Will you polish my boots?”
“Yes sir.”

I finished my walk around LuLu B’s , spotting more shiny gold and brass.
I have a thing for punch bowls, and I have always wanted a brass punch bowl.
I am letting that go…
No more punch bowls.

I'm not sure I could've stepped away from the dishes. They were sure pretty. Oh, well, I guess you're right, you don't need them all.
I love it when someone comes to visit Dallas and tells me about somewhere I've never been....love those dishes....
You sure are using some of your very best self-control. Goodness! I'm impressed.
Loved your memory of your parents. It's so heart-warming and a little heart-achy to remember those old convesations...
Glad you are playing while you are in Arlington working.

Love the dishes and I know you could have used one more set:) It sounds like a day like I had, looking and not buying everything I wanted! Love the "polish my boots" story! I love any story with Parents in it:)
Have a blessed day my friend! HUGS!
I probably would have taken out a loan on the spot to purchase those dishes!
I polished my dad's dress shoes every Saturday night when I was a child. AND, I tied his tie before we went to church. What lovely memories.

Great little shopping trip AND walk down memory lane : ) There was never anything as magical to me as a little girl as my mom getting ready to go out for the evening. She had me at 22, so in my mind she will always be young and pretty and my heroine {still is}! My dad still looks great when he dresses up for an occasion, too....and always smells good, as well! xx Suzanne
Well done Laura in the impulse control arena. I have three punch bowls. As we are down sizing eventually I will have to part with one or two. How I say.

Great memory of your dad and mom...wonder what our kids will remember about us. So, did you buy anything?
What self control you have!
Thanks for sharing the pictures of the great possibilities - and that little vignette from your childhood.
Isn't it funny how little bits of memories pop back in our heads? I'd love to use that 60's stereo for a table - one long pice of glass on top of it -
Beautiful items. Love the coffee/tea pot and the punch bowl. We won't even talk about the dishes...I think I'm addicted.
I never really liked gold dishes before, but now I see the attraction! Also, love the stereo - it reminds me of my grandmother's big stereo. She even had several Ray Charles albums so this is a nice memory for me. She also had some not-so-great Lawrence Welk ones so thanks for not playing those!
The gold and the brass are not my "cup of tea" but I love your story. I also love how you tie your music into whatever you're talking about. Extremely intelligent blog Laura ~ I really enjoy it. Thank you for putting your music at the beginning (just in case I'm listening to something else) I hate scrolling all the way to the bottom, however so far I've turned MY music off and enjoyed YOUR selection!
Great willpower!
Seeing the stereo brings back wonderful memories for me. We had one much like it. I grew up with lots of music playing all the time and made music a part of my career for a long time. I thought those stereos were the coolest!

You know Laura...I think you & are are from the same era, just a little south east of you =) But, I do believe, if you were raised in Texas, especially this part of Texas, we are somewhat related in a wonderful sort of way...music, dancing, antiques....ah, I love the dishes you stared long & hard at. But, like you said, who needs MORE dishes?
Yes, LuLu B's would be a place I would like to stop by....
LuLu B's looks like a great place to browse. I have had to resist buying more dishes, too, since I totally ran out of room to store them. But those were so pretty! Great memories, too!
The dishes were pretty. I can see why you liked them. I kinda have a thing for gold myself. But over the top stuff. The gaudier the better. I'm liking that owl on the white nesting tables - pretty cool themselves - too.
I like how you resisted the purchase but went with the lovely memory!
Great stereo, we had one that was my m-i-l's that needed to leave in the worst way. My son-in-law took it, and computer genius that he is, somehow hooked it up to his i-pod and now they love it. Pretty funky and sounds incredible!! Sounds like your mom and dad knew how to have a great time.
xo,
Debra
What a nifty store!
What a great post!!!!
I imagine I would love that store but think I should avoid because I don't think my impulse control will be as good as yours was ;-)
what a beautiful things!!!

Thanks from spain
It's fun to look even when you don't buy, isn't it!?
