My fixation on chafing dishes was fueled by reading three of Julia Reed’s books: Queen of the Turtle Derby and Other Southern Phenomena, The House on First Street, and Ham Biscuits, Hostess Gowns, and Other Southern Specialties: An Entertaining Life (with recipes).
If you have read any of her books or essays on southern living and entertaining, you will understand.
Plus chafing dishes are pretty, treasure-filled when used, and evidence of family/friend shared recipes and cooking.
This is proof.
The only time in chafing dish history where we may have gotten a little confused was during the 70’s and the era of fondue.
Although fun, the idea of dipping our food INTO a common serving dish, rather than taking it OUT, was interesting.
I am not a purist, and I will never make this.
However I have served artichoke dip, scalloped pineapple, broccoli cheese dip, and multiple cream cheese concoctions- all in shiny, silver serving pieces and chafing dishes.
I just love them so.
I know… Little House on the Prairie one day and silver chafing dishes the next…
It’s just the way my mind works.

I love silver when it is ornate like your chafing dish...I use mine to put all my monthly correspondence in...I hate paper clutter...this way it's out of sight...wish it could be out of mind, too :)...

I love the post! Over the past year I have found several silver chafing dish bottoms (missing the dish) and repurposed them into other things....fun, fun, fun!

Well I this chafing dish is wonderful!! I have a friend who is a chef and she has the commercial variety... but nothing as beautiful as this!!!

I am not sharing this post with Hubby, lol. He loves tongue (lengua) - especially if it's covered with mole. He would probably love that recipe.

Wow! Your post today brought memories flooding back ~~ the Sunday night ritual our family had (in the 70's) of having fondue dinners. I really got quite creative with sauces too.
Do I have fondue recipes. I hosted a going away party and served savory and sweet fondues. I called it a "FONDue Farewell Party" I know I was having too much fun.

Beautiful chafing dish! But the tongue recipe brought back some funny childhood memories. My family was visiting an elderly family when I was a teenager and I knew the beef for dinner was good as I chewed, but when I swallowed it was awful. Mother told me it was tongue! Then we had the leftover tongue the next morning with eggs! Yuk! Linda
