On Saturday, January 2nd, I woke up at my daughter’s house- outside Houston- at 4:30 am. You may remember I had driven my grandsons home to their parents on New Year’s Eve.
My husband had not been up to going (I think he had a football virus), so the boys and I set out on our own , and after great adventure, multiple food stops, and singing in the car, we arrived safely.
The next day, New Year’s Day, my daughter and I drove to Canton and met Daughter #3.
Back to January 2nd and Silver Sunday.
On Saturday, even though it was only 4:30 am, I decided to leave since I was up. Once the car was heated , and I could see through my iced windows, I headed out.
I was headed home.
Or so I thought…
As I drove south on 45, my dilemma began. I knew there was an exit quickly approaching which would aim me at Austin.
I also knew that the famous Austin Citywide Garage Sale was that morning…
I was already about 6 hours away from home- what’s a FEW more hours?
I had had a 16 ounce cup of Community Club coffee by that point (one of the ways I try to channel Louisiana), so when the exit sign appeared, I threw the dice.
I was headed to Austin.
By about Giddings I was starving.
Thank goodness for Mel’s Diner. I stopped there and had coffee, a sausage omelet, grits, and biscuits. When the nice waitress came to my table and asked,
“Where you headed?”
I wanted to say Dodge City (note: I get easily caught up in road trip fantasy), but I didn’t.
By that point I was in love with Giddings, Mel’s Diner, and I wanted to find a house there for my husband and me.
I wondered if there was a river nearby and if they needed a retired high school English teacher at their high school.
Keep in mind, my husband is back home unaware of my thinking.
The Austin Citywide Garage Sale was great, and my contribution to Silver Sunday is this silver coffee service.
I didn’t care that the sugar bowl was missing its lid (sometimes I am missing MY LID); I loved it.
Who cares that the tray was engraved with some award in 1962? I didn’t.
My criteria for silver plate trays? Does it have ALL of its feet.
Happy Silver Sunday II. Thank you Gypsyfish!

Laura you are so funny...good thing your husband was home with football flu and didn't realize what you were up to....looks like a nice set you got....Did you say Hey to Flo while you were at Mel's diner????
Well what a fun trip. I can so identify with your thoughts. Fantasies are wonderful. I love your silver service. Have a great day...julie
Laura, Loved your post, you cracked me up! Love your sense of humor and adventure, I know we'd get along famously, although I am not as funny. Love your silver find too, I have the tray and the pot, just need the sugar and creamer now. Blessings, Marla
Oh Laura, It is beautiful! You are so funny! Did you meet Flow? LOL Hope you have a great day! Blessings, Faye
Laura, the silver is beautiful but the story is priceless! I just love the way the stories of your treasures unfold. You are a wonderful writer.
A good thing your hubby had the Football virus...if sometimes they did know what we were up to or in your case WHERE ARE YOU!
Glad you found some fabulous pieces to share your story tucked in between them.
Loved your adventuresome imagination! As to Dodge City, it can get pretty cold this time of year...sometimes a little too hot in the summer and toss in a little tornadic weather in the spring; are you sure that is where you would want to be! Beautiful coffee service...if I remember correctly, you don't do the polishing bit, right? Most of the time I do polish it, but leaving it out on display it does get that pretty patina, quite fast, I have discovered!
With it being so cold up here in Maine, I would love a road trip. Especially if there were treasures like yours at the end of the trip. Thanks for sharing.
Sounds like you had a good trip and found treasures along the way.
What a great adventure! Your descriptions sure made me smile!
Great finds! I love silver and I don't think I could've resisted a city-wide yard sale, either.
Love those little detours...fantastic silver! Happy Silver Sunday...
What a nice trip off the beaten path:) Love the coffee service! Too pretty! Enjoy your Sunday!

Great post! I live in Houston and have visited Giddings but haven't made it to Mel's OR the sales! I need to stop in next time and see what great things I can find! I LOVE your silver...and the feet on the tray. I don't worry about lids either...I'm way from perfect and this reminds me to live life to the fullest and let my cup overflow! Thanks again for sharing!
Does it have all it's feet? LOL I love that criteria!! Your set is beautiful and your travels are an inspiration. I love adventures like that :0) I'm glad you had that good meal before the hard work it is to persevere the sales...
Loved the story and what a prefect find to share for SS. Been through Giddings many times but never have stopped at Mel's...maybe next time.
Also have never made the Austin City Wide Garage Sale...maybe next time too.

I love your sense of adventure and I would have been right there with you! You found a fabulous coffee service and I love the fact that there was a date engraved in the platter, I think it adds character.
I just want to thank you again for the blog makeover giveaway. I contacted Jackie and will be getting my questionnaire soon. I am super excited about having a blog look that really reflects me. Thanks again.
I will be blogging about it this week to let everyone know what a wonderful giveaway I won and to be prepared for the new and approved Mamie Jane's!!

What an incredible find! Your silver tea service is gorgeous. It's possible that the lid may not be missing. Maybe the sugar bowl is an "open" sugar bowl. Regardless, it's a great piece.
Have a beautiful new week...Kathy
Laura, love your sense of humor! I haven't been to the City Wide Garage Sale in years. Need to put that back on my radar. Glad you had fun and found the tea set. Thanks for sharing. ~ Sarah
