One of the many reasons I enjoyed teaching Emerson was his belief in self-actualization.
This was long before the word ‘self ’ became a sign for all that is wrong with the world.
Emerson’s self-actualization is not self-centeredness.
It is found in those perfect moments in time, often unknown to those in the moment.
I have been a witness to just such moments, in a small high school gym in South Texas ,where my nephew plays varsity basketball. I have mentioned this before, but in my heart, it bears repeating.
This is not about wins or losses, but rather his skill and grace and his unselfishness. He likes to pass and share the ball with his teammates as much as he enjoys shooting.
Can the love and legacy of being the third Jim Mills in the room (gym) be measured? Because you see my nephew is Trey, as in tres, as in the third.
Jim Mills , Sr. and Jim Mills, Jr. are watching; Uncle John and Aunt Laura are watching; his mother is watching. We are all watching Jim Mills, III.
One last virtue in this self-actualization business: when you strive to be humble, and you are raised to not brag and all that that includes, it is SO MUCH FUN to read things like this in the local newspaper.

Laura, kudos to the III. I had to tell you that the song Fields of Gold by Sting is one of my favs. Love the one you have.
ReplyDeleteWow, what an awesome young man. Someone has been leading by example, maybe I and II? I think he certainly deserves that pot roast! So glad that you can be there to cheer him on. He's one that deserves the pats on the back. Team spirit and humility. a great combination!

What a sweet post! I believe one of the greatest gifts we can give our children is to be able to play or be part of a team and look outside of ourselves. Your nephew sounds like a wonderful young man.

ReplyDeleteThis brings back so many good memories for me! My oldest son, who is now a college Jr.,was a high school basketball player. High school basketball is so thrilling to watch, especially when you're cheering for a particular player. They truly possess an unadulterated love of the game, don't they? Your nephew is a wonderful young man and with his skills and height (Wow.6'5") I bet you'll be cheering him on in college B'ball.:)
Oh how sweet! I know you are proud of him and happy others recognize his accomplishments. My grandson, 11 years old, is playing upwards basketball with the Church. He loves to shoot but at the game Saturday, I was admiring the way they teach them to pass to others so they can shoot too. Neat! Have a blessed evening Dear Laura!

ReplyDeleteNormally with being a third, I would wonder if he would be able to fill the shoes of the previous two, but being 6'5", I bet his feet are big enough to do the trick and with such a supportive family, his head won't get in the way. Aunt Laura, you have every reason to be proud and shout it to the world. He seems like a fine young man.
