Faded Charm’s White Wednesday

IMGP0866

As a little girl growing up on a ranch miles from town, during the era of AM radio, I only heard one version, and one version only , of White Christmas.

         White Christmas=Bing Crosby

My mother played it on her console stereo every Christmas season.  Remember the stereos that were part of a piece of furniture, fabric speaker fronts and all?

I was raised to value and care for the tip of a record player needle, placing it perfectly in the tiny groove before the next song on the album began.

I can still hear that quiet scratchiness, signifying that something wonderful was going to begin.

It was a sort of magical, musical ‘on your mark’.

I just asked my husband what day it was, and he said Wednesday.  I missed the party , but I still wanted to share. Does anyone else lose track of the time?

        Isn’t that wonderful?

  6. I never know what day it is. :)

I love Mr. Bing! I also love the scratchy old records and vinyls. My auntie had a big old stereo console thingy. She always had the most romantic music playing. A good memory for me and I've never forgotten the ambiance. I seek it out daily in my own home.

Thanks for sharing...I NEED YOUR ADDRESS! Don't forget!

  7. Hey Laura,
What a lovely picture you painted! The ornaments are beautiful and I still can hear that quiet scratchiness of the record starting to play...there was something comforting in that sound that you just don't hear in our crystal clear sound of today.

    Bless you,
    Susan

  8. No home was complete without that piece of "furniture"! I also remember Daddy taping a penny to the arm to make the needle last longer. My Bing favorite was "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town"! I loved singing along especially the line "I mean the big fat man with the long white beard"! Makes me smile even now.
I'm jealous...it looks like you've got your decorating well in hand!

  9. Yep, I grew up with one of those stereos too....and sadly, I'm old enough to say that I had one as a young married too. Whew, that was a LONG time ago.

    Love your whites....beautiful as always.

    Warm blessings,

  15. We had one of those stereos too and were never allowed to open it and load the records, my Mom always did. Now a days you couldn't give those things away. I'm sure my kids would think they were something from Mars! Lovely post.
