Visiting the public library to check out books has always been one of my favorite things to do. In fact I have library cards at 4 local, city libraries. (That is probably against the law…)
On a recent trip, quite by accident- because I COULDN’T SEE – I selected books from this section.
Let me just say that a new world explodes when you open a LARGE PRINT book.
Mercy. I then began to speed read. It’s hard not to.
While in New Normal earlier this week, I finished Ruth Reichl’s Comfort Me With Apples , which is a wonderful autobiographical tale about her life as a restaurant critic in Berkley in the 60’s.
Yesterday as I yearned for something else to read , I thought again of my Amazon shopping cart, now a mile long with a bottom line total of a million dollars . No, I decided, I am not doing that.
The quest began.
I visited one of the 4 libraries I mentioned and found out that they could order this for me-
I got a call the next day that it was in. I picked it up , ordered Gilead by Marilynne Robinson and because I am a more is more person/collector, I went to library #2 the next day , and they located this at another library.
While driving home, I started thinking about the Tara Frey blogging book , and it became very clear.
I am in over my head.
Hee hee. Our library is associated with most of the libraries across the state so I can order just about anything...which can lead to quite a stack of books at times, and DVDs, etc. We can put up to 20 holds per card. I have my card, Sunshine's and Cabinet Man's card number memorized, so I can put up to 60 books at a time on hold for me, me and CM, Sunshine or all of us, including College Dude. I found a bunch of books at Goodwill today for $1 and $2...NEW books...but I was sadly out of money.

ReplyDeleteGrowing up in a large family of readers, we always used the library, but for a few paperbacks picked up at the drugstore and then we all took turns with it. I can't tell you the joy I get in choosing, buying and OWNING my own books. I usually manage to persuade friends not to borrow my books. I never (almost) give or throw them away. When I make my "Border's Run" every 3-4 months, I buy up to 10 books or so. When I get home, I don't read any of them for weeks. I simply savor looking at them on my nightstand, a gift yet to be opened, savoring the mystery...
I know I sound like an odd duck. Posessions are an odd thing for me because I grew up with so little and had to share what I had.
By the way, I adore the late Laurie Colwin. Her early work is fantastic, but let me know what you think of the book you have in your pile. I think it was her last. I'm not sure if I "got it".

I love, love, love libraries... but old ones. My high school elective was library science. I enjoyed Mrs. Duncan's library science class for three years at A&M Consolidated High School. I was a big reader back then. I loved the order of the library and keeping the books in good shape. I worked at the library at Texas A&M University and in fact, was invited out on our first date by my husband at the front desk at the entrance to the library. Now I am not sure I would know how to use a library... it's all so computerized. The thrill of walking out of a library though cradling some good reads is something I need to think about doing soon.

I love the fact that you can get books with large print! A whole new way of reading!! I haven't used the library lately but something I should get back into. ReplyDeleteI LOVE the bookstore. The Mr. refuses to go to them with me. Because he can't get me to leave. Seriously. I could, and do, spend hours in there. I love afternoon coffee with a book, in the chair with sunshine streaming in. MMMMMmmmmmm.
ReplyDeleteI just love going to the library. We have a new one here in our little town that is quite amazing. And I did the same thing, picked up a large print book by accident. Boy, I don't know if I can go back to regular print anymore lol. And don't you just love the way a library smells? Ours smells extra good because it has a little coffee shop in the back - coffee and books, what could be a more perfect mix. Have a great weekend. Kathy
