I joined a zumba class this afternoon. I can not move.
The music is wonderful. The other participants are of varying ages. This is a ‘flying under the radar’ class (my favorite criteria as you well know), offered by the city.
Another nice woman in the class ,who appears to be a member of my generation, stood by a LARGE fan. This zumba person is very, very smart.
At one point, I thought my feet were on fire. I also did not realize that the amazing feats of dancing that one does is one’s mind do not always transfer to the feet. I immediately decided that I needed new shoes- ten minutes into the class- and my middle daughter, who also attended, agreed. What would you say to your mother in a zumba class whose feet were on fire?
Add to that music played at what had to be warp speed, and you have zumba.
Apparently there are accessories that zumba enthusiasts buy, which I am certain would help me master moves that seem to combine salsa, kick boxing, belly dancing, the cha cha, and spinning in opposite directions simultaneously.
The veteran zumba dancers in the class all wore cute little shoes and a colorful scarf around their hips adorned with silver coins . I quickly decided that wearing the scarf that jingles requires a level of zumba confidence that I am not feeling yet- in those parts of my body that still have feeling.
PS. I really had fun…
What can one say?! Wow!
ReplyDeleteI've taken Zumba classes. So much Fun! but boy do you feel like the most uncoordinated, clumsy person! it still feels good to move like that doenst it? This was maybe 5 years ago, no one war the scarves and decor though, what fun to add to it! Don't you feel like a dance team?
ReplyDeleteI have wondered what Zumba is. Oh I can't help but laugh even thinking about it. I attempted Jazzercize more than once...I'm the girl who is always turning the wrong direction and stepping up when everyone else is stepping down. No coins on a scarf for me! Keep us posted. It sounds like it has to be good for you..and hey, at least it's indoors on a hot summer day.
ReplyDeleteThese classes are fun! The results are amazing!
ReplyDeleteThat's wonderful.. Never taken a zumba class but would love to. You'll have to keep us posted on your adventures there. I hear it is wonderful for the Bod! xoxo~Kathy @ Sweet Up-North.
ReplyDeleteSounds wonderfully fun! you comment about the "mind and body"... reminds me of Flash Dance... remember that. I found myself in front of a mirror trying some of those 1980's dance steps... and my youngest daughter in her infinate wisdom said... "no mommy... nooooo!"... nuff said on that one...
ReplyDeleteI think my body is not ready for Zumba but it certainly sounds fun... now where are those muffins... ;)
I have always wanted to do a Zumba class. It looks like fun, but I don't know if I would like my feet to be on fire, lol. I have to admit I have one of those scarves with coins. I took a belly dancing class about a year ago and we all bought one during the second session of the class. It seems unless your hips are jingling it is hard to tell if you are moving correctly. Mine kept falling down, not sure if it was the way I tied it or the fact that it had to cover such an expanse of hip.
ReplyDeleteI think I could win the Funniest Video prize if I took a Zumba class. But. . . I'd sure like to try it. Keep it up! Sounds like so much fun.
ReplyDeleteSounds like fun. I really need to do something like that.

I am closing my eyes and picturing you with your feet on fire and wearing your scarf with silver coins as you Zumba across the floor. Priceless.
ReplyDeleteHoly cow woman!! Do you remember the days that we went to aerobics class at 5 in the morning, or some ungodly hour!! You and L will have to put on a recital for us!!

um... no.. you do NOT need those crazy hip scarves. i know very few zumba instructors that use them. I've been in classes who use them and it becomes almost dangerous when the parts of the scarf start flying off! lol. I teach zumba, and i NEVER use those scarves. but believe me, there is PLENTY moving and shaking in my class, you don't need a scarf to "prove" it. so, go on wit cho bad self. represent YOU... don't conform to that class' mentality of "needing" the scarves. you will do FINE moving, shaking, and dancing. but yes, if feet are on fire--NEW SHOES. ;o)
ReplyDeleteI do Zumba 3 times a week, and absolutely love it! Hope you had a great time...and if ever in doubt about the moves...just shake it!! I'm sure the instructor told you that! Love your site...I'm new to blogging. Come check out my site when you have a chance!
ReplyDeleteLaura... bee flatware... I decided I'd get it instead of a facelift... ;)
ReplyDeleteyou know... you should plan a fall trip to San Marcos to go Junkin with Candy and me... we have so much fun!
Thanks for letting me know about Zuma - had no idea... Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteI mean Zumba. See - I don't even know enough about it to know how to spell it. Or say it.
ReplyDeleteHi Laura - Thanks for stopping by. It hurt at first, but not now. It looks a lot worse than it is, due to the fact that I have always bruised easily and also on a med. that adds to the problem. I am using the triple antibiotic ointment on the cuts. I am keeping a very close eye on the situation. Thanks for asking. :-)

Oh you made be laugh!!! Zumba is offered at my church and I was wondering what it was. I figured it was a fancy name for jazzercise. Are you going back???
ReplyDeleteI wish there was a class in my area. I've heard that it really is fun. Of course, even when I go to a regular exercise class, I have to be at the back of the room, because I feel SO uncoordinated. I can just imagine how I'd look doing Zumba. Love your description of it. laurie
