Role Reversal

I visited the odd world of middle-aged role reversal  (that alternate universe where the child becomes the adult, and you the adult become the child) this afternoon when adult daughter #2 stopped by and said, “Mom , you need to write more of your own blogs.”

Translation: more personal accounts, essay-like writing, thinking, reflecting- less awkward attempts to blog another way.

Role reversal in my life comes often now as my daughters periodically begin sentences with,

“Mom, you need to…”

I can’t tell you how many times I began sentences like that to them, but I bet they can… millions of times.

Flashback to their childhood.

Me to Daughter 1,2,or 3:

“You need to__________.” Or

“You need __________.”

Sigh… It all felt so urgent then when they were children. I had so much I needed to tell them, had to tell them.

They did need to , or they did need.

Now, apparently I DO.

Role Reversal.

  5. I can relate! Did we get dumber and lose reasoning ability? Or did our kids become so wise because we raised them so well?

  6. I don't really mind the role reversal too much. It keeps things "fresh". And I'd like to think that in my daughters peculiar ways, they are trying to "take care" of me. And I like that.

  10. What a blessing to have our children "remind" us of what we need to do. :o) My daughter is more apt to tell me, than my son. :o)
I worry so much at times, that I have not shared everything I need to with my children. I want to tell them so much. :o)

  11. My daughter knows me better than anyone else so I generally listen to her when she starts in telling me what she thinks I should do. She is actually the one to get me to start blogging...to create my identity. Bless her heart!
I agree with your daughter...write from your heart. It's always so beautiful to read.

  12. Well, I have four daughters...and to be honest...it sort of gets to me. Especially when they begin disapproving of my blogging..and make it known. I don't get it. It hurts my feelings.
I was a pretty easy Mom with very few "you need to's going on. They were good and I really did not have a problem with them. So...I would just like to live my life now like I let them live theirs!
They are wonderful women but think I am in danger on here. Very protective.
Oh well. My dream of writing what I want...guess not! :)

  13. Laura,
It is good we have our grown children to keep us humble. I know my not so little darling does! Cathy

  14. Oh My!! If my sons ever become as naggy as I am we are in trouble! It is so sweet to see the roles reversed at times. It's always interesting to see how they perceive things...sometimes it's quite different from what we think.

  16. Funny. My husband corrects me every time I say I "need" anything like a new purse, dress, etc. Hmph. Men ... they just don't understand.

  19. I agree. It seemed so urgent to tell them what you felt they needed to know, or do, because it is such a short window of time to impart parental wisdom. Now they feel wise and like to impart their own wisdom. I look at it as a form of love. Like a dear friend letting us know their own perspective on life. They can say what they feel knowing we are the only people in their lives that absolutely will not turn them away regardless of what they may tell us. They are right. Plus they keep us young with their fresh ideas.
