What Blogging Means to Me

Blogging for me is the ability to connect, to communicate, to create, to be part of a community of like-minded people, to enjoy the company of non- like-minded people, to commiserate, to savor cooking again, to consider the daily discipline in cleaning, to compare notes, to believe I can, to feel incorporated, to speak and sculpt through my computer, to be inspired.

Today my father had heart surgery involving 5 bypasses. He is 83. As I shared with a dear friend on the phone earlier today, I am honored to be involved in his care. I am not naive. I know it will be a challenge, and that feeling of honor may quickly turn to feelings of exhaustion and frustration. But the good news is my laptop travels- with my blog in its heart- even to destinations as close as his house down the street. My books and my thoughts and my common sense travel as well. This common sense that my parents taught me is in my backbone.

As they wheeled my father out of his hospital room to take him to surgery, he looked at my brother and me-his children- and he said,

“Keep a tight rein.”

I have shared on this very blog that those words are my all time favorite quote. And so my brother and I will do just that.

  1. You, your family, and your Dad will be in my prayers. I know how you feel. My Dad had surgery for cancer 9 months ago. He had a laryngectomy (removal of his voice box). I certainly remember how I felt when they rolled him into surgery. Completely overwhelmed! Comfort came from knowing that others cared and were lifting all of us up in prayer. He has a favorite quote as well, "God is Good all the time, All the time God is Good." He is doing well now after months of treatment. I know your Dad will do well too. Take care of yourself and know that others care and know how you are feeling.

  2. Have kept you and your dad in my prayers. He's one tough cowboy!! Tell him I said hello. I still remember the day he came to the hospital when Drew had his appendix removed. It blew me away!!! Take care of yourself my friend, so you can take good care of him.
