little house on the prairie fantasy
Our home, which was virtually condemned before we bought it and ‘fixed it up’, was originally a low-slung ranch structure with standard 8 foot ceilings.
Trust me. That was the least of our worries. Once remodeling began, I thought about putting a sign in the front yard that said Laura’s Folly. We live on a short , dead end street, and I promise I saw people drive by slowly, headed to nowhere, staring in shock, with their mouths hanging open.
That did not deter me. Our home is now OUR wonderful (in my opinion) low-slung haven. You can stretch out all through it; you just can’t stand on top of something while you do it.
And so I cheat. Throughout the house, wherever I have taller pieces, as in a smaller scale secretary, or a pair of china cabinets I have flanking the fireplace, I hang things as high up as scale permits. This is the top of the second cabinet.
I have done the same thing above a larger china cabinet.
And above a mantel in the study.
What helps ,I think, is the boundary of painted walls and white crown moulding. Crown moulding is a fairly recent addition (about five years ago) , but rather than shorten our ceilings, I think it lengthened them. That’s my story (and my rationale for getting it), and I’m sticking to it.

I adore crown mouldings. Cheat, no. Enhance the view is what I would call it!
Thanks for your encouraging words about my writing!
Glad we "met' here. Decorating is another love of mine.
That's not cheating, that's using your creativity in a way to really "fool" the eye and let those 8 foot cielings appear "higher". Smart girl! Guess what? It looks like we've the same color palette. I've got the yellow walls, the white crown and the white ceilings too. Aside from adding wonderful character, the crown seemed to "lift" the height of the ceiling and I kept the ceilings white to "fool" the eye. I did the same in the kitchen and the bathrooms and hung the window dressings "higher" as well. I love these little...how did you say? Cheats! LOL!
Thanks for stopping by my blog. When I read your response I literally laughed out loud :0)
I hope you are enjoying your day! See you soon!
